Rose's Studio, Bucks Mills

Very quirky and the location couldn’t be better,on a stream with a patio and a 3 minute walk to the beach with a waterfall.Couldn’t have been anymore comfortable!The fact dogs were welcome at no extra charge was amazing we actually think the place is undercharging!

The property itself is lovely, in a great location, and feels very cosy. It was easy to find even though we arrived at night, and it’s ideal for anyone who enjoys nature walks. Communication with the owner was also very good, she responded quickly whenever we reached out. The place was generally clean, although as mentioned in advance, there are spider webs intentionally left to help control insects. Even with that warning, I have to say I was quite shocked to find a very large spider (around 7 cm including legs) right next to the bed on arrival. If you’re not a fan of spiders, this is definitely something to be aware of.

There were a few issues that made the stay less smooth than expected. When we arrived at night, the keys provided didn’t work for our studio/annexe but instead opened the main cottage. We had to message the owner, who responded quickly and explained that a previous guest may have mixed them up, then gave us access to another lockbox which worked. While this was resolved quickly, it does feel like something that should be checked beforehand, as it’s a key part of the check-in process. I had explicitly asked in advance whether there would be Nespresso pods for the coffee machine, as well as tea bags, and was told yes. This was important to me as there are no nearby facilities, with the closest place to get coffee being about a 40-minute walk to a garden centre that isn’t always open. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. There were only a few pods provided (one already used), and none of them worked properly with the machine. They either popped straight out or wouldn’t engage at all, so we couldn’t make coffee. The tea situation wasn’t much better, with just 3 old-looking tea bags that had little to no flavour. The listing also mentions memory foam pillows, which were there but they were bulky and high. It suggests alternative thinner pillows available on a shelf, but we couldn’t find them. The bathroom is understandably small given the size of the property, but the sink setup is quite awkward to use without making a mess. There’s a glass shelf positioned in a way that makes it easy to bump your head (which I did multiple times), and the layout makes it difficult to use the sink comfortably. The instructions for getting hot water were also unclear. Overall, it feels like the property was set up really nicely at some point, but some of the smaller details haven’t been checked or maintained recently. It’s a shame, as it has a lot of potential, but a combination of these minor issues did impact our stay. They’re all fairly easy things to fix.
