Region: Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.
Town: Kielder village is the most remote village in England and is surrounded by the largest man made forest in Northern Europe, on the edge of the largest man made lake in Northern Europe, Kielder Water. With probably the best ‘dark skies’ in England, and voted as Britain’s most tranquil place by the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, the area is ideal for outdoor activities. There are many signed walking paths through the forest, with the 26 mile Lakeside Way around the lake, as well as higher level fell walks. There are cycle tracks with different routes to suit a variety of abilities, fishing, horse riding, kayaking, sailing and water skiing. There is an abundance of wildlife in the area with red squirrel, roe deer and many bird species including the Osprey. Hadrian's Wall is just an easy drive away and there are many castles and fortified houses in the area, reminders from the times when the “Border Reivers” raided the Anglo-Scottish border. National Trust properties including Wallington Hall and Cragside are a scenic drive away.
