Kashiwaya Inn

The apartment is absolutely wow - spacious, spotlessly clean and beautifully designed hundred years ago. Dinner was excellent and being able to have it here made all the difference after a long day on the Nakasendo Trail. Yasuhiro (the host) was outstanding: incredibly helpful with every request, quick to reply and genuinely welcoming from start to finish. We spent 15 days travelling across Japan and this was the best accommodation of the entire trip. Highly recommended to anyone walking the Nakasendo or exploring the Kiso Valley

Fantastisches historisches Gebäude! Wir hatten die japanischen Zimmer im Erdgeschoss, in denen die Übernachtung für unsere Familie ein besonderes Erlebnis war. Uns standen mehrere private Räume zur Verfügung, darunter zwei Räume zum Schlafen, die sich durch Schiebetüren kombinieren lassen und zwei Räume mit Tischen. Die Ausstattung war hervorragend mit vielen netten Extras für Regentage - ein Schachbrett, eine Tischtennisplatte und ein Musikinstrument. Das autenthische japanische Frühstück konnte morgens selbst aufgewärmt werden, dafür stand in der Küche rund um die Uhr heißes Wasser bereit. Auch das Abendessen, welches zusätzlich bestellt werden konnte, war ein nettes Highlight. Nagiso und auch das Gästehaus liegen außerdem direkt am Nakasendo und lässt sich deshalb hervorragend mit einer Wanderung kombinieren.

Für uns kein Problem, aber wie auch in den anderen Kommentaren oft angemerkt, ist das Gebäude sehr hellhörig (wir hatten beispielsweise über uns drei Kinder..), einen Gemeinschaftsbereich mit Küche und Dusche (für die sich außerhalb des Gebäudes - nur ein kurzer überdachter Weg - befindet).

I happened to be on the second floor and had the whole thing to myself - it was very spacious and lovely. The house is old so I was afraid it wasn't going to be very nice, but I was really pleasantly surprised - it was clean and there was no old house or mould smell. There was also a shared kitchen and facilities. I was there for one night so I didn't get to use them but it's good to know they are there. The owner was very nice and helpful and even let me check in two hours earlier because there was going to be rain (downpour with thunder and lightning actually). Other people who were staying downstairs got caught in the downpour and he was nice enough to go pick them up. He's quick to respond to messages and requests. I live in Japan and speak the language, but I did hear him speak English with the other guests so overseas tourists wouldn't have anything to worry about.

Well the bathroom was downstairs and the stairs (ladder) were steep. HOWEVER this is an old house and I expected that, I was also warned beforehand, so it's not so much a negative point but a note to the people who need to go during the night.

Breathtaking and amazing place to stay in Kiso Valley, staying there is an experience of its own kind. Strongly recommended.
