Town: The attractive, unspoilt rural village of Melmerby nestling at the foot of the Pennine scar is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District, North Pennines, Hadrian’s Wall and the beautiful Eden Valley. Melmerby takes its name from having been the home of a Dane named Melmor, who resided in the village in the ninth century. Today Melmerby offers a wide green with a winding stream, a pub, a shop, a bakery and a church, and is situated on C2C Cycle Route. The surrounding countryside is abundant with wildlife and is home to the native red squirrel, and hares can be spotted easily, and the varied landscape is also a haven for birdwatchers, where curlews, oystercatchers and lapwings can be seen during the summer months.
