About this farm stay rental

‘Les Portails’ is a converted farmhouse with an open sided barn located in a tiny hamlet, conveniently situated for local produce, sporting facilities and sites of historical and cultural interest. Behind the distinctive arched wooden gates feast your eyes on the rolling hills of the Aveyron countryside and absorb its natural beauty and tranquillity.

The house has been carefully restored and furnished substantially in local traditional style retaining features such as exposed beams whilst offering high quality modern facilities. The large enclosed garden, which is not overlooked, is mostly laid to grass punctuated with trees, which can offer welcome shade in the sunny summer months. The swimming pool is located in the garden a few yards from the house and has its own patio for lounging in the sunshine.

A GREAT PLACE TO RELAX AND UNWIND OR HAVE AN ACTIVE HOLIDAY IF YOU PREFER.

The farmhouse has a ‘pigeonnier’, an attractive feature from bygone days when pigeon droppings were prized and sold for profit. There are no longer any pigeons and none of the accommodation is in the pigeonnier!

Accessible directly from the garden, the kitchen has a traditional fireplace with a wood burning stove, a large family dining table and chairs. The kitchen was completely refitted in 2013 with large built in oven, dishwasher and washing machine, induction hob and granite worktops. There is a large freestanding fridge/freezer and combination oven with microwave and grill. The kitchen is comprehensively equipped with cookware and plenty of tableware for eight people. This modern facility will suit those who just want to make a quick snack as well as the most enthusiastic of cooks.

The master bedroom opens off the kitchen with its own window onto the garden. This room has a double bed, wardrobe and bedside tables. Attached is the ensuite, which has a bath with shower over, basin, bidet and WC.

The first floor sitting room is directly accessible from the kitchen, via a locally crafted wooden staircase. It has beautiful views over the garden and hillsides and direct access to a terrace located on the south side of the house. The terrace also has stunning views and an electric awning to protect you from the sun. There is a sofa bed and other easy chairs in the sitting room as well as TV,DVD, HiFi and broadband internet and WiFi. The terrace has a garden table with chairs to seat eight and also has a separate external staircase leading to the garden.

The second and third bedrooms and the family shower room are individually accessible from the sitting room via a short corridor. Bedroom two has a double bed and bedroom three a double bed and two single beds. Each has ample hanging and cupboard space. The family shower room has an enclosed shower, basin and WC.

The open sided barn is directly accessible from the lane and is large enough to accommodate two or three cars. It is also a useful covered space for your children to play out of the sun or if you have a showery day. The traditional ‘cave’ opens off the barn and contains a large spare fridge/ freezer, bicycles and children’s toys.

‘Les Portails’ offers easy access to airports at Toulouse (2hrs - Aer Lingus, BA, easyJet, Jet 2 and Flybe), and Brive (2hrs - CityJet). Brive (2hrs Ryanair)

The A20 AutoRoute is just over an hours drive away and there are a multitude of non-motorway options for reaching the house.

The Aveyron is one of the largest Departements in France and is the least populated. The area is rich in historic, cultural. geographical and geological sites of interest, including the breath taking Gorges of the Aveyron and Tarn. Among the many nearby towns and villages to visit are Albi, Belcastel, Cordes, Conques, Najac, Rodez, Roquefort, Sauveterre, St Antonin, St Cirq Lapopie and Millau with its famous modern bridge. There are colourful local markets and wonderful local food and wine. Both local independent shops and supermarkets are available in Villefranche de Rouergue, eight miles away or more locally at La Fouillade (5 miles) and Sanvensa (2 miles). There are plenty of restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets within fifteen minutes drive from the house.

There is a wide variety of sporting activities locally including canoeing, horse riding, fishing, tennis and golf. There are many possibilities for walkers in the unspoilt countryside. There is horse riding at Najac as well as canoeing. It is possible to take longer trips along the river from Lagepie to St Antonin.

There is a basic tennis court in Sanvensa and more in Najac, which also has a large open-air swimming pool. Albi and Rodez have excellent eighteen hole golf courses and there is a basic par three nine hole course with a driving range in Villefranche.

We loved our stay. A beautiful gîte in a fabulous location. Everything we hoped for. It was very hot, so we didn’t do as much travelling about as we thought we might, but having the pool was just perfect, especially for the boys. The guest book was really helpful when it came to planning what to do and where to eat.We appreciated the calm and tranquility and I particularly loved the beautiful view and sitting watching the swallows and other birds that enjoyed the garden and surrounding area. The house was very well equipped and had everything we needed…and more! I had been to this region before and it did not disappoint this time round.A big thanks to John for all he did to ensure we had a very enjoyable stay in his lovely gîte.

Found it no problem, key was in press house is lovely with lots of old-world charm. Great Kitchen and lovely comfortable cozy lounge. But it's about the outside. The garden is fantastic with a few different areas to sit. The pool is perfect. Jerrome (sorry spelling) was around to do the lawn and check the pool and was very friendly and helpful. Also check out the Auberge in Sanvensa for lunch, just do it it's amazing.

The house is in a gorgeous and tranquil setting with lovely views across the garden and valley beyond. There is a lovely big garden with a nice (unheated) pool. There were lots of kids toys available which was perfect for our 2 year old. There were bikes which we used to cycle the pretty local roads (which were quite hilly, but I liked that...!) The kitchen in the house had everything you needed and all the appliances worked well. There wasnt a lot of space in the kitchen and lots of the rooms were very dark and a bit dingy and the decor was dated. This property is best enjoyed when you want to spend time outside. There were also lots and lots of flies which was a bit annoying sometimes. There were also a lot of rules and requirements for guests which in other houses we've been to have been done for you such as uncovering the pool, getting all the garden furniture out, cleaning the house etc but as long as you are happy to do that then its not problem. Overall i would recommend this house.

We recently enjoyed our holiday in this beautiful house. The house itself is full of character, and beautifully situated in a rural environment with very nice views on the surrounding hills. The property has all the facilities you need (including good WiFi - vital for our kids ;-)) and is very comfortable. The garden is huge, with enough trees to offer shadow during a canicule. Shops, markets, restaurants nearby in villages Sanvensa (5 min) and La Fouillade (15 min). We enjoyed a nice balance of exploration and relaxation during our stay (with a lot of sun), and would really recommend this house. After 2 weeks, it felt a bit like we were leaving home instead of returning home.

We spent 2 weeks in Oubax & had a wonderful holiday. The house is lovely, very comfortable & certainly has the best equipped kitchen of any rental property I’ve ever stayed in. We didn’t use the TV but it was available with English & French stations & the WiFi was excellent inside & out. The terrace, garden & pool overlook beautiful countryside which was everchanging during our visit as the farmers harvested their fields. Although rural, shopping facilities are within easy driving distance, & there are plenty of restaurants to suit all tastes. The area has many great markets selling such fabulous fresh produce that you want to buy everything & take it back to the house & start cooking. As well as visiting the markets, beautiful bastides & the rivers, it’s a great area for crafts - we visited a number of artisan potters & jewellery makers & watched them at work before buying. I would highly recommend Les Portails to anyone looking to visit this region of France. It makes an excellent base for exploring but is also perfect for staying put. It’s such a good place to relax, have a swim, cook local produce, drink local wine & eat on the terrace looking out at the countryside. After all of that you sit for hours and stargaze. Perfect.

A lovely quiet holiday home in a very rural area, but within easy reach of restaurants and supermarkets. The Gite had a stunning view of the surrounding countryside, and for most of the time the only sounds were the birds and insects. At night it was quiet and you could sit out watching the stars with no intrusive lights. The accommodation was absolutely fine, with all the facilities you could need, and very comfortable. We ate in and used restaurants in Najac and Villefranche, both only 15 minutes away by car. There is a supermarket only 5 minutes up the road, and Villefranche has everything you could need. We visited some of the cave sites north of here, and also found numerous prehistoric dolmen sites from the maps, and have fallen in love with the Bastides, so this proved to be a brilliant base for our adventures.

We spent two weeks in Oubax and liked it very much. The house is well off the beaten track and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The garden and pool are great and there is more than enough space to park your car and bikes. The kitchen is well equipped but lacks storage space and could do with a bigger bin (you have to separate your waste and have at least two bin bags at the same time but only one small bin). The sitting room upstairs feels a bit dated. Thelma and John are very nice hosts and were always quick to answer emails. There is a lot to do and see nearby and we managed to rent mountain bikes for the time from the tourist information in Villefranche (delivered to the house).
