Mevagissey is a charming fishing village perched on Cornwall’s south coast, brimming with maritime character and scenic beauty. Its bustling harbour offers fresh seafood, crabbing from the quay, and small boat trips to Fowey against a backdrop of historic boats and sea views. The village’s compact museum and aquarium, housed in an old lifeboat station, offer free admission and fascinating displays of local marine life and Cornish heritage. Keen explorers can enjoy the Cornish Coast Path walks to nearby coves like Gorran Haven and Pentewan, while the Pentewan Valley cycle trail provides a peaceful leafy route that connects to the Eden.

Just a short drive inland lies the stunning Lost Gardens of Heligan (4 miles), 200 acres of beautifully restored Victorian gardens, including the famed sub-tropical Jungle with a 100 foot rope bridge, the Italian and productive gardens, ancient camellias and rhododendrons, and enchanting sculptures such as the Mud Maid and Giant’s Head.

Nearby Charlestown boasts a beautifully preserved tall ships harbour, often used in film and TV, which houses the Shipwreck Treasure Museum and makes for a picturesque day trip. Finally, the world famous Eden Project, set in a former clay quarry near St Austell, presents giant biomes recreating rainforest and Mediterranean climates, outdoor gardens, sculptures, educational exhibits, and even zip-wire rides, perfect for family visitors and weather-proof.

Whether it’s coastal strolling, botanical discovery, maritime ambiance, or interactive ecological adventures, Mevagissey and its surroundings offer a wonderfully diverse Cornish escape. Shops 100 yards, pubs and restaurants 200 yards.

The view is amazing well worth the climb. Cottage comfortable and well equipped. The shower wasn't brilliant but plenty of hot water and storage heaters warmed cottage up nicely. We parked in harbour car park cost £35 for the week machine only takes coins, shops not happy to change notes, we phoned harbour number and a very pleasant and helpful harbour master took our notes and gave us parking permit. The only thing we were not happy about was no recycling bags/boxes supplied hated throwing recycling away. Definitely worth a second visit and we will be going back.
