About this cottage rental

This apartment cottage is named after King Charles I, who took refuge at Sudeley Castle after his failed siege of Gloucester during the English Civil War.

Entrance to the apartment is via one of two outdoor staircases (at each end of the Old Forge) and the shared decking area, which faces a pretty lawn and the footpath to Sudeley Castle.

The first floor has a bright and light open plan living area, dining area and fully equipped kitchen, with a stunning central window overlooking the main courtyard. A pretty, divided staircase leads up to the double bedroom to the right and the single bedroom and bathroom to the left.

Note: the three Old Forge apartment cottages have restricted headroom in parts of the bedrooms and landing areas due to the original oak beams and A-frame structure.

Ground Floor
Living/Dining/Kitchen Area:
Stepping into the living room from the decking area, you'll immediately be struck by the original and huge Old Forge window that is the centrepiece of the downstairs floor in Charles I, making this a very bright and welcoming apartment furnished with country cottage fabrics.

At the entrance, you will find an understair cupboard housing a travel cot, stair gate, highchair, iron, ironing board, airer, as well as the Welcome Dog Basket (with stainless steel bowl and blanket).

A comfortable sofa, sink-in armchair with a footstool and wooden antique chair provide plenty of seating for 4 in the living area. In addition, the living area is furnished with an oak coffee table, occasional tables, a Freeview TV and DVD player.

The fully equipped kitchen, overlooking the decking and garden, has a country-cottage feel, with fresh off-white coloured and wooden work surfaces. The kitchen has all the appliances, cookware, crockery and glassware you need for a self-catering holiday, including an oven/hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, kettle and Nespresso coffee machine and washer/dryer. (See ‘Facilities' above for further details.) A welcome pack of teabags, Nespresso coffee pods, hot chocolate, milk, biscuits, jam/honey mini pots, boiled sweets are provided for your first day at the Cottage.

Extending from the kitchen is a spacious dining area with a round, oak dining table and chairs for 4 that overlooks the main Sudeley Cottages courtyard.

First Floor
Bedroom 1:
The master bedroom is furnished with an oak frame standard double bed, bedside tables and individual overbed lights with reading and room lighting. This dual aspect bedroom, with windows to the front and back, has a handy dressing area with hanging cupboard - also the perfect place to set up a little one's travel cot.

Bedroom 2:
Furnished with an oak frame single bed, bedside table and individual overbed light with reading and room lighting, this is a cosy bedroom with views to the rear over the garden and decking area. A small hanging cupboard (for shirts and jackets), chair and vanity shelf with mirror provide lots of space for guests' clothes and personal items.

Family Bathroom:
Adjacent to Bedroom 2 is the family bathroom, with a large walk-in shower (with a fixed over-head rain shower and detachable handheld shower head) toilet, sink with shaver unit and heated towel rail.

Outside
Guests of Charles I share a lovely wooden decking area (with the George III and Prince Rupert apartments) that looks out over a communal garden lawn and a footpath that leads to Sudeley Castle. Each apartment has its own private seating area with table and chairs for 4 guests.

Lovely complex of cottages which we have stayed in a few times before and would go back to again. However, we were disappointed by the grounds maintenance, or more accurately, the lack of. This has declined noticeably since our first visits with weeds and other overgrowth evident throughout the complex. This is particularly disappointing due to the links to Sudley Castle and its impressive and well maintained gardens! The wooden outdoor furniture was tired and not very comfortable and a patio umbrella would have been very welcome as we stayed during the recent heatwave. Unsurprisingly, the upstairs of the cottage was very hot - although a fan was provided.

The Cottage was very sweet, and generally well-equipped but very cold, and we couldn’t get the heated towel rail to work so we constantly had damp towels. Tea and coffee was provided but .. 6 tea bags for 3 people for 3 nights?? (Luckily there are a couple of supermarkets in the village … ) Washing machine also provided but no soap due to ‘allergy reasons’ Beds were comfortable but sofa in the lounge was not!! Property was quiet (we were off-season) and free entrance to Sudeley Castle was a real bonus.

The cottage provides a comfortable, clean place to stay in a complex of several cottages set in a scenic location. Castle and grounds are beautiful with great history and have free entry to people staying in the cottages, really worth a visit.
