Fifteen minutes east of Cashiers, and 55 minutes southeast of Asheville, N.C. is Mountain Laurel Cottage; a wonderful two bedroom, two bathroom home, that boasts a spectacular, long distance, southwest view of Chimney Top and Whiteside Mountains.
Designed by Al Platt (yes, the same one who designed the nationally recognized 2006 HGTV Dream Home), Mountain Laurel Cottage not only takes advantage of the impressive view from this five acre estate, but also offers a superb natural mountain experience. Enjoy a cool mountain breeze, or the warmth of a crackling fire, on the comfortably furnished, screened, living room/porch, which is the common family area of the home. Screened on three sides, it has a high vaulted ceiling, and lets you enjoy the acres of surrounding nature. Inside the home are the bedrooms, bathrooms, den/living area and the kitchen that opens onto that screened living room/porch area. Peace, quiet, and privacy are your neighbors. From the living room/porch step outside onto an uncovered deck where there is a large gas grill ready to cook your favorite meal. This is truly designer mountain living!
The Mountain Laurel Cottage estate is situated at an elevation of 3800 ft, on the 320 acre, gated, Preserve at Rock Creek. With 215 of the Preserve’s acres dedicated to conservation; pristine forests, plentiful waterfalls, and ancient rock formations are all a splendid hike away.
Fine dining, boutique/convenience shopping, additional golf / tennis facilities, more stream/lake fishing, renowned hiking, and a multitude of incredible waterfalls are all within fifteen minutes. There is even a post office, a gas station, and a convenience store five minutes of Mountain Laurel Cottage, on the main east-west artery, State Road 64.

This house was a getaway. The screened porch is great. We spent a lot of time outside reading and typically had our meals there. The view over the valley is wonderful. The house was spotless. The kitchen was clean and well-equipped. There were a couple of issues. WiFi is extremely poor. The modem would drop off line every couple of minutes. Using a cell phone as a hot spot is not an alternative due to poor coverage. This was reported to the property manager, but we received no response. The grill is not usable. It is extremely dirty and smells like a rodent may have died in it. These were the only issues, If corrected this house would be tops on our list as a vacation base.

Great mountain cabin with comfortable beds, amazing views and perfect for a serene get-away! I got to see a friendly baby bear in the woods near the cabin. Screened in porch is heavenly stocked with plenty of fire wood. Not well stocked to cook. Bring your own cooking utensils if you are planning to cook. Do not follow Apple maps or the VRBO directions to this place. They don't work. Owner needs to update with detailed directions on how to find the cabin. I was thankful that management was available when I was lost in the neighborhood because apple maps took me to the wrong place. The smoke detectors need to be inspected as one beeped while I was there. The master bedroom fan was covered in dust. Other than that, this is a great place and perfect for a small family.

The house is lovely, the bed was comfortable and the inside of the house was very clean. The view is great. It’s easy to get there. We did have to clean the porch furniture with the vacuum cleaner, but that was fine. However, the Wi-Fi did not work. If you don’t need the internet, you’ll be okay. Otherwise, it’s a slog.
