EnricoFrancioli (1814 - 1886) - the Tsars’ Painter

Enrico Francioli, also known as the Tsars’ Painter,was born on September 25, 1814, in Milan. His career, marked by numerousacclaims, began as early as the first half of the 19thcentury in Milan’s artistic circles. From 1855 to 1858he lived in Saint Petersburg and was awarded by the Tsar the prestigious title of Academician andcourt painter. After his return to Milan in 1860, the artistdecided to settle in Bureglio di Vignone—thebirthplace of his family. He spent the remaining years of his life there until his death in 1886.In the second half of the 19th century, Francioli devoted himself almostexclusively to religious painting, leaving a significant legacy inthe churches, oratories, and chapels in the surrounding area. This artistic legacy can still be seen today and is the pride of the community.
