The George is brilliantly located with excellent staff. However, the room was rather old with threadbare furniture and a small window for ventilation. Indeed, the window in the bathroom was blocked. As the priest on Sunday in Alfriston is the George "good old" or just "old old" - the latter is the correct answer. OK it is not the Star and the Pollizi glamour and it was constructed in the 14th century but decor of the 1920's is no longer acceptable. Sussex is full of excellent antique shops and older, more robuster furniture and accoutriments can be found at reasonable cost. River Cottage is no longer in business - so strip out the carpet, keep the bed and replace the aged furniture as well as install a shower in the bathroom. Increase the price by 25% and everyone will be happy. Staff and breakfast excellent. Thinking longer-term should not be impossible for a medieval hostellerie.
