Superb staff, good food, delightful garden and pool - a very pleasant place to stay. Snorkelling trip to the island was a great experience - a gentle float over recovering coral surrounded by the best fish I have ever seen (and this includes the Great Barrier Reef). The trip back in a high wind was not so gentle.
Permuteran is not a shopping destination but has good restaurants, dive centres galore and a friendly atmosphere.

My friend and I had a lovely time at Kubuku. Permuteran is a great destination often missed by tourists, but has a unique black sand beach, friendly locals and great snorkelling.
We thought all the staff at Kubuku were so friendly, helpful and welcoming. It felt likea family. The rooms are lovely, and the private outdoor bathroom is beautiful ( though perhaps not for everyone).
I also must highly recommend the food. Best we've had in Bali and very cheap. Everything is fresh and organic.
We did quite a lot of activities. Snorkelling trip to Menjangan island is a must. The cooking class was also lots of fun. I'd recommend d using a spa down te road which would be nicer and cheaper. The morning yoga was also nice but not the best I've had.
Kubuku is a budget friendly hostel with exceptional service and te best food we've had in Bali. Highly recommended!

The setting is tropical Balinese, lots of greenery and flowers. Very quiet, safe and clean. Outdoor bathroom, sounds quaint, but in truth the shower is a bit brutal, like being assaulted by an angry garden hose, one strong stream of water only, no dispersal. Small pool, adequate privacy. Food a bit ordinary here but lots of good cheap warungs outside. This hotel is NOT on the beach side of the road. One should be wary of the word Eco as often it only seems to translate to 'less of' rather than any REAL commitment to the health of the planet. Eco here seems to mean no TV (wonderful!) but also no kettle for tea and coffee and no fridge. They do provide thermos flasks of boiling water so you could make your own in your room, but you had to go to the kitchen and request same. Privacy is an issue in some rooms, but not all, depending on wall between units in some and not others, and proximity of walkway in some.
