About this house rental

Looking for beautiful mountain and lake views and great hiking? Welcome to Glendale. This historic home was built in the 1860’s in nearby Orange County, and was moved piece by piece to this amazing nine-acre mountaintop site in the 1990’s.  It combines genuine historic character with new systems and plumbing, providing the best of both worlds.  The hardwood floors, staircase, doors, and windows all come from the original 1860 farmhouse. Every window and all six balconies offer awe-inspiring vistas over the neighboring lake and far beyond to the horizon.  There are amazing sunrises in the morning, and in the winter, when the leaves are off the trees, you can enjoy beautiful sunsets as well!

The home features two bedrooms, each with its own fireplace, and two- and one-half bathrooms, providing ample space and privacy for your stay. The largest bathroom has a clawfoot tub, walk in shower and heated tile floor and opens onto its own balcony.  Each thoughtfully appointed bedroom has cozy bedding and tasteful decor, ensuring a restful night's sleep. The deck off the main bedroom has a porch swing, comfortable chairs and even a lounger that could be used to sleep on the porch if you desired. The second bedroom has some exercise equipment, weights, yoga mat, and a Peloton Bike. The first floor of the home features two more fireplaces, for four throughout the home, adding warmth and intimacy to create the perfect ambiance for relaxation. The living room has a large television set with over the air service as well as Wi-Fi connected Apple TV. The kitchen is equipped with all the essentials you need, whether you are whipping up a country breakfast or making a complicated gourmet meal. With ample counter space, gas stove, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, crockpot, and more, the kitchen is fully stocked. Step onto the outside porch with covered dining area and BBQ and adjoining deck with comfortable seating area and amazing views of the valley.

Venture beyond the cabin's boundaries to discover the wonders that surround you. Lace up your hiking boots and embark on hikes of all levels in nearby Shenandoah National Park and the Skyline Drive (12-minute drive to the Swift Run Gap park entrance), where breathtaking vistas and scenic trails await. Lydia Mountain Lodge is just a few minutes away, which has the closest restaurant with magnificent views as well.  There are quite a few wineries in the area, Barboursville and Early Mountain Vineyards are some favorites.  The house is also conveniently located about 35 minutes north of Charlottesville and 20 minutes from Madison.

Amazingly well stocked with plenty of room to spread out with 2 couples! All dishes, condiments, spices if needed! Great deck with beautiful views! Good parking. One drawback is the winding, narrow, gravel/dirt roads to access the home which could be an issue in bad weather. And we would’ve loved to have had a hot tub on the deck overlooking the beautiful views. (I think many or most of Lydia’s properties have those).

Well, the home is beautiful. However, there are a couple items that disappointed us. The thermostat for the heat is located behind the door in the living room. Bad location. We used the fireplace so the rest of the house was cold. Bad location. We didn’t find another one. The refrigerator had food in it. Not sure how long it was there. When we used the shower, there was a sewer smell throughout the house. Finally, house and mainly the master bedroom was infested with stink bugs. The master bath sink drains slow.

This home is in a great location with fabulous views. The home is well laid our with a very nice wood burning fireplace in the living room. It is well appointed with everything a guest might reasonably require. Unfortunately, there is an overwhelmingly strong sewer smell that permeates the entire home, rendering it unsuitable for rental. Judging from the fact that there are several robust but completely ineffective air purifiers throughout the home, this is not a onetime event and the owners are aware of it.
