Fountainhill Estate Accommodation

We were very pleasantly surprised by this accommodation, which we booked at the last moment as a stop on a road trip. The suite we had was well equipped, with a small living room as well as two bedrooms and two modern bathrooms. It would be perfect for guests attending an event who needed somewhere to change before the event and then overnight. The rooms were comfortable and cosy even on a cold June night. The suites are organised around three sides of a lawn area and are within a few minute's easy stroll of a pretty onsite chapel. The complex looked a bit spartan when we visited as we were the only guests. However, it presents a blank canvas that could look lovely if decorated for an event such as a wedding or special birthday. It also has a dining room (where breakfast is served) and a well equipped catering kitchen should you be looking to rent the venue for an event. It is located directly off the main road into Wartburg from Pietermaritzburg, although far enough for traffic noise not to be an issue. There is good security, with 24 hour manned access control to the estate and parking immediately adjacent to the accommodation. The biggest surprise for us was how lovely the surrounding estate is, nestled in the rolling Natal Midlands. We took drives at sunset and sunrise - the dry winter conditions made it possible to do this in an ordinary sedan - and were amazed at the variety and number of large mammals and birds. We've spent a lot of time in the bush over many years and were surprised that the wildlife on the estate rivalled what we'd expect to see in game reserves. Excellent value for money and highly recommended!

The breakfast was not particularly good. There was careful portion control and the quality of the ingredients was just OK rather than great (and the amount of sugar sprinkled on the grilled tomatoes was not to our taste). However, there were generous amounts of toast and we couldn't expect much given that we were given breakfast free.

Amazing location. Check in process was very easy to follow. We were launching the replacement of pit toilets at schools close by so this was incredibly well located. Everything inside the unit was perfect - spotlessly clean with fridge, kettle, tea and coffee facilities, very comfortable beds. Loved the giraffes walking past the unit and its just a perfect place for running or hiking. Breakfast was amazing - thank you!

Shower water was luke warm but not a problem after a run on the stunning tracks. Wifi was quite slow but still worked fine.

Beautiful property with game roaming, lovely walks, friendly and efficient staff, lovely facilities, comfortable beds, hot water and everything you need available for a self-catering facility. Very comfortable stay. Wide open spaces, very relaxing and in a lovely area outside Maritzburg.

Road from Pietermaritzburg to Fountainhill not wonderful but not terrible either - just be aware and preferably don't travel it at night due to potholes and pedestrians.
