Hermes Cave House by Oias Local Cave Houses

Lovely, really lovely, spacious unit for 1-2 people. It’s just like the photos and is full of the character you’d expect from something called a cave house. Georgia the host is also lovely and helpful and speaks excellent English for those of us who don’t speak Greek. Excellent value for money, albeit on the non fashionable side of Oia, it’s a 5-10mins walk up hill to the main tourist drag. It’s close but happily removed from the hordes (!) of influencers queuing for hours near photogenic hotspots like the 3 churches to get their endless selfie poses (and ruining an otherwise magnificent town).

Minor thing: the toilet does not flush well, so you place used toilet paper in an adjacent bin. That’s a bit ick to me. Georgia said it’s due to a sewer problem in Oia which I did not encounter in neighbouring villages of Finikia and Fira. However, a far bigger negative, which is not the hotel’s fault, is that jackhammers are going from 7.30am to 3pm on construction for a dusty gravel car park right next door, sending noise through the apartment, which kills the ambience, so I’d say come back when it’s done, if you like to chill out at your hotel during the day So ordinarily it’s an easy 9-10 for me, but a 7 at present because of the noise.

Typical house with stylish details, with a beautiful external space, few meters from the center but away from noise.

We had an excellent stay and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The apartment was spotless, comfortable, and beautifully maintained. The hosts were incredibly welcoming, friendly, and always happy to help with recommendations and anything we needed.The location was perfect, making it easy to explore the surrounding area. We would definitely love to return!
