Plantation, an eco chic villa, Weligama

We had a wonderful stay at Midigama Plantation Villa. Hidden among rice fields and a mango grove, away from the busy coastline, this place feels like a peaceful retreat. The large swimming pool is beautiful, and the surrounding nature is incredible: we saw langurs, mongooses & many birds. It felt like having a small wildlife sanctuary right outside our door. The Sri Lankan breakfasts prepared for us each morning were delicious, and our personal manager, Sampath, was always available and happy to help with anything we needed. In the evenings, we enjoyed spending time in the living room. The villa itself is stunning, filled with antique pieces and designed like a traditional plantation house, full of character and charm. The internet was reliable, the atmosphere was calm, and our stay was truly peaceful and relaxing.

One small suggestion for improvement: it would be great if the villa could provide shower gel and disposable toothbrushes. These are items that travelers often forget while moving between destinations, and having them available would make the stay even more convenient.

The villas (3 in total) are elegant and stylish, and nicely separated from each other. One of the owners is an interior designer, and it shows, both in the design and quality of the fixtures and fittings. We loved waking up each morning to all the sights and sounds of the nature (langurs, tropical birds, mongoose, and even a porcupine) it was often a wrench to tear ourselves away to pop to the local beaches. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to the main villa (due to a cancellation), which had a beautiful and enormous master suite. Breakfast on the veranda eating things like egg hoppers and coconut pancakes were magical. Sampath and his team looked after us so well, we’d love to stay again!

Not a don’t like, just expect nature can be loud sometimes (eg langurs and peacocks) and as the property is near a village there’s the occasional spell of noise from neighbours. For us it wasn’t an issue at all, and we found our stay very peaceful. Also, probably best to have your own transport, although the team can arrange tuk tuks and taxis and nearest beaches are only a 5-10min drive
