Alex and staff help make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Their shuttle runs make the location accessible. The house is older but kept clean and cozy. No access to a kitchen but they have shared fridges, a microwave and toaster oven. Would definitely recommend and will be stay here again next time

Great option for accomodation if you’re staying in Myoko! The place is nice and tidy, with amazing onsen/bath! The staff is always there to help! The place is a bit far from the main towns, but the run shuttles often to town and to the ski fields! Overall really great experience! Shout out to Alex who went above and beyond to help us! :)

We stayed at Canadian House for 10 nights, booking because of the many glowing reviews from previous guests. It is important for prospective guests to know that the guesthouse has recently changed ownership, and our experience under the new management was very different from what the earlier reviews suggest. Having travelled extensively in Japan and stayed in a range of guesthouses and ryokan, we were particularly looking forward to this stay. Unfortunately, the Japanese owners sold the accommodation earlier this year and new Australian owners have taken over. Before arriving we were informed of the change in ownership. I contacted them to ask whether Japanese breakfasts would still be offered and was told they hoped this would be available by the time of our stay. In the end, this did not eventuate. We approached our stay with an open mind, hoping the new owners would maintain the high standards that built the property’s strong reputation. Unfortunately, as the days passed a number of issues arose and our overall impression steadily declined. Transfer bookings were not consistently recorded correctly. On one occasion we were left stranded at Myoko Station at night, and at other times departure times were not adhered to. Some bookings were omitted entirely, leaving us to adjust around later bookings that had been made. Following the incident where we were left at the station, there appeared to be more attention given to managing bookings, although this came late in our stay. The property is in an isolated location and there are limited nearby dining options, yet there is effectively no organised dinner service provided. We were shown a photo of a possible meal option but no dinner time or pricing was discussed. While a microwave and toaster oven are available for guests, we were told to request crockery and cutlery rather than helping ourselves, which proved difficult as staff were often unavailable in the evenings. The onsens are advertised as opening at 3pm, however they were frequently not heated in time, meaning guests had to wait to wash after returning from the day. Several guests also commented that the temperature (listed as 42°C) felt too cool. At departure we were charged ¥1500 per person for two breakfasts. Each consisted of one egg, one slice of bacon, three small sausages and a single slice of bread. In hindsight we would have booked a traditional ryokan instead, where the hospitality Japan is known for is more consistently delivered. For future guests, I would recommend confirming transfer bookings in writing through the booking platform to avoid any ambiguity about dates and times. The reputation of this guesthouse appears to be largely based on the standards set by the previous owners. Our experience under the current management did not reflect those standards, and travellers seeking authentic Japanese hospitality would likely be better served choosing a traditional ryokan.
