I stayed at Rustic River for almost two weeks during my recent trip to Thailand, and honestly, it was one of the nicest places I’ve stayed on this journey. I travel regularly and stay in everything from luxury five-star hotels to small guest houses, and Rustic River reminded me that great hospitality isn’t about marble lobbies or fancy facilities. It’s about people, comfort, and atmosphere. The staff were consistently kind, welcoming and accommodating throughout my stay. My room was cleaned beautifully every day, and I was genuinely happy to leave a tip because the team worked so hard and took real pride in what they do. I’m actually surprised by some of the negative reviews. I had absolutely no issues with mosquitoes during my stay, and the Wi-Fi was reliable enough for me to attend work meetings without any problems. Yes, I stayed in one of the more expensive rooms, but even that was incredibly affordable. In fact, considering the quality, it felt like exceptional value for money. What I loved most was that this is a locally owned and operated guest house with real character. After spending time in larger corporate hotels, where you often get every facility but very little soul, Rustic River felt genuinely Chiang Mai. It has personality, warmth and a sense of place. There is no food service or breakfast, but that’s clearly stated when you book, so it wasn’t an issue for me. The location was perfect: close enough to explore, enjoy fantastic local massages, wander through nearby markets, and experience the city, while still feeling peaceful and tucked away. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the atmosphere was relaxed, and there was a lovely mix of travellers staying there. Is it a luxury hotel? No. Is it trying to be? Also no. What it is, is a charming, comfortable, affordable guest house run by lovely local people who genuinely care about their guests. For me, it was exactly right, and I would happily stay here again.

I love traditional timber buildings, and the conversion of this one into a hotel is a great thing to see. My large room faced the rear of the building, so was protected from traffic noise. It was clean, and cleaned every day, with a large comfortable bed, and spacious ensuite. The air-con was a must because it was really hot while I was there. Lovely staff member Yo helped me with several things I needed. You can walk to most sights and markets from here, and songtheows are on the front street.

It was somewhere nice to stay, the bed was okay.
It was on top floor which ultimately was a lot for us to do several times a day due to no balcony. We ask for a coffee, and the staff told us that it's closed. And for the whole time we were there, we didn't see the coffee machine being used. Most of the staff were pretty rude. The shower was not great. It looked like I hadn't been cleaned on the head itself.Looked like it was about ten years old, there was a lot of lime scale.
