In addition to the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which hosts an annual changing display of the renowned author's pictures and stories, the village is home to several charming inns, teashops, guest houses, and gift shops. You may visit the location where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form and even see the desk into which he wrote his name as a young child by visiting the Old Grammar School, which is still standing today. William Wordsworth is another well-known Hawkshead admirer.

We were a group of 4 couples having a reunion for about a week. The house is perfect for this, having a spacious feel in the lounge, kitchen, dining area and patio. We ate in most nights and enjoyed sitting around the dining table for several hours. The garden is large and well-stocked with a fantastic view of the hills. There are lovely walks from the house across fields to Hawkshead (1.5 miles) and Wray Castle (2 miles). The friendly Outgate Inn is at the end of the drive. Orchard Cottage was perfect for our needs.
