We came in Japans winter and it was snowing so different to the pictures but it was still absolutely beautiful. Rooms are huge and lovely bathrooms. Staff were very lovely and accommodating. Two onsens to choose from, highly recommend this stay!

Location - Pro: Mountain resort retreat. Far away from the busyness of Karuizawa town center. - Con: Quite remote. Shuttle bus is available but not very frequent and operations end before 5pm. Taxis are available but will cost around 4,000-5,000 yen per trip. Facilities - Pro: Staying at the resort can be a destination in itself. Onsen and scenuc views are fabulous. This is probably my favorite feature of the hotel. Restaurant/Food - There are a few restaurants but pricey as expected. Hotel breakfast food was good but not great considering the hotel's five star status. Some 4 star hotels in Japan (outside Tokyo) serve better quality and variety. Staff - Mixed experience - most are nice and helpful while some can be quite slow to act on urgent requests. For instance on my last day, I had to wait for ten minutes for a cart to be arranged after making my first call. I had to call a second time because I had to take the shuttle bus going to Karuizawa Station. I didn't mind walking from my villa lodge but I had a baggages with me.

I had a two night stay at Le Grand. My room was fantastic and the views were stunning. My relatively icy review is due to the fact that there were a number of customers at the breakfast buffet who were visibly unwell, including a child who was coughing and sneezing on the food. I alerted a waitstaff to a specific instance of a child sneezing on their hands and then touching the cereal and fruit, and nothing was done. For a place that charges this much, and rightly so due to the beautiful setting, I expect greater emphasis on customer safety.
