About this house rental

Longing for peace and quiet? Looking to enjoy a taste of true Hill Country history? Does the term “perfect morning experience” mean anything to you? Head to the Starry Hilltop, nestled in the hills between Wimberley and Blanco.

Starry Hilltop offers genuine serenity in true Hill Country decor. Originally built as a stone hunting cabin a century ago, the house sits on over 15 acres offering long vistas and tranquil privacy. The night sky is perfect for stargazing and the wildlife is abundant.

Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by a large deck, with long southern views of Hill Country majesty and the Devil’s Backbone. The house’s location on the tip of a hill provides this outdoor area with a near constant breeze - an absolute gem in the hotter seasons. Enjoy drinks or a meal outside, using the outdoor kitchen and charcoal grill, then head to the fire pit for s’mores.

As you head inside you’re met with everpresent stone and wood - the hallmarks of a Hill Country home. A cheery and spacious hallway leads you to the living areas, passing two smaller bedrooms on the side. Both rooms are equipped with double bunk beds, making Starry Hilltop the perfect choice for retreats or large family getaways.

The hall leads you to two roomy and unique living areas. On your left is the Alamo Room - the original stone cabin! The cabin’s remaining stone walls and the hundred-year-old iron stove set the ambiance. Here you can relax, enjoying classic cozy comforts of deep shade and handcrafted decor. Wind down with a book from the mini library or pass the time with a small selection of DVDs.

The larger living space combines a fully-stocked kitchen and large dining and sitting area, all oriented around that same striking southern view. The freshly-renovated kitchen has everything you need to prepare a great meal or host an event. Brand-new appliances and equipment make cooking a breeze and the farmhouse sink “under the snake” makes washing up a true pleasure. Just be kind to the house’s old pipes! Please put nothing but liquids into the sink.

Across from the spacious, new island (which extends the humble library’s collection on its south end), you’ll find the large, hand-made dining table. This simple country table can seat ten comfortably, making each meal or game night an absolute delight. You’ll find board games inside of the old bench in the adjoining seating area. But can you find the “ostrich on the table?”

The aforementioned seating area is the perfect place to wind down or to enjoy the view when weather is less accommodating. The nearby hutch - almost three times as old as the house - offers beverage glasses and, you guessed it, a few more books. Just outside of the main living area you’ll find a small wrap-around patio - the perfect place to enjoy evening drinks or morning coffee.

Finally, just off of the main area you’ll make your way into the cozy master bedroom. This room features a comfortable queen size bed, traditional and antique furniture, and a private en suite bathroom. And of course, wonderful views are just outside your window.

Allow yourself to unplug! Though most mobile carriers have a reasonable signal in this secluded area, the house features no WiFi. Instead, we encourage you to gaze at the stars, unwind with a book, or walk (or bike!) along the old horse trails on the property. Feel free to explore the entire acreage: you’ll be rewarded with wonderful sunsets on the back half of the property, close encounters with the local fauna, and a couple of swings, made for guests of all ages.

And of course the house is a perfect jumping-off point for exploring the Hill Country. All the sights and delights of Wimberley are just 15 minutes away. The same distance separates you from the square in Blanco and just five minutes more takes you to Mercer Street in Dripping Springs. Fredericksburg is a gorgeous 45-minute drive away. Explore the area and then take a load off in your own, private slice of the Texas Hill Country.

We grabbed this spot last minute for the long weekend, and I am so glad we did! It is a quick drive in from San Antonio, but it feels world's away. Beautiful hill country sunsets, great stargazing, and plenty of land for our kids and dogs to explore. (We brought hiking boots for the terrain-they came in very handy) The area was rich with interesting rocks, minerals, and fossils. We brought a mini telescope & were able to get some great shots of the moon in the mornings! We loved that there was no wifi and we could focus on connecting as a family. The library was impressive and far more extensive than I could have hoped for---great book picks, right up our ally. There were plenty of great family games, and we played several throughout our stay. When we were sleepy or it was hot outside, we cozied around the DVD player & watched Little House on the Prairie.Big kitchen, fully stocked with utensils. Great long wooden table for meals, as well as plenty of outdoor seating as well. Beds were comfy, sound is well insulated room to room, and the entire house had a very cozy feel.

Pros: very quiet and peaceful setting, kitchen is appointed nicely with all newer appliances, plenty of books for kids and adults alike, open spaces were nice. Cons: cleaning only appeared to have been done through the high-traffic areas of the home. Dead and live bugs and mounds of dust found underneath ottoman, benches, chairs, etc. overall upkeep of the grounds is very poor and does not look at all like the photos. The fenced in area is all overgrown and unkept, so if you have any ideas about letting your kids or pets run around in that area to play, you might want to curb your expectations of that. Previous guests pet hair was found on the master bedroom comforter, and a few of the couches. We decided to re-wash the bedsheets as finding black dog hair on the supposedly “clean” comforter was a bit unsettling. Coffee pot was not clean upon our arrival so we re-washed that. All in all we would give this rental a 5/10. The potential is definitely there for this to be a fantastic property, however it just falls short due to inadequate cleaning practices and lack of general upkeep of the yard. I even contacted the host prior to us booking to inquire about other guests experience with the un-cut grass that I had read about in some of the other reviews, but even having done so did not result in the grass being cut for our stay. I wish the property owner/manager cared a bit more about that issue, but it’s clear that they are set in their ways about how to manage the property.
