Afonso Guest House - Fontainhas

What I loved most about Afonso Guest House was the feeling of arriving at a home rather than simply at a place to stay. Jeanette is an incredibly warm, kind and attentive woman. She genuinely cares about how you are, how you are enjoying your stay, and anything you might need. I also loved hearing her speak Portuguese from time to time; as a Spanish speaker, that closeness of language added an unexpected sense of familiarity, almost as if I were a little closer to home. Her willingness to help goes far beyond what you would normally expect from an accommodation. I had been having problems with Booking while trying to pay for my previous stay in Gokarna, and Jeanette personally helped me make the transfer, which I then reimbursed her for. Before I left, we also shared a delicious lemonade and a sweet she had made herself. They may seem like small gestures, but they say a great deal about the way people are welcomed into this house. The place itself is wonderful. I was particularly fascinated by the traditional windows and the bathroom door, where instead of glass there are translucent pieces of mother-of-pearl shell, a beautiful feature of traditional Goan architecture connected to its Indo-Portuguese heritage. The terrace, the plants and all these little details give the house a very special character. I would also like to mention the women who help around the house, who were always attentive and ready to make things easier. I particularly recommend using the laundry service: I handed over my clothes in the morning, and that same afternoon everything was clean, neatly folded and ready. It is inexpensive, and when you are travelling, it is wonderful not to have to spend valuable time taking care of these things. Breakfast was excellent, the terrace is beautiful and very pleasant, the plants surround the space, and everything is cared for with a warmth that you can genuinely feel. I would especially recommend Afonso Guest House to Spanish travellers.

There is honestly nothing I can point to that I didn’t like. My stay felt warm, easy and beautifully cared for from beginning to end. If anything, the only difficult part was leaving a place that had started to feel a little like home

We stayed in Afonso Guest House, a charming guest house in the Latin Quarter, Panjim, Goa, which is run by Mrs Afonso and her son. The homestay is their 200-year-old ancestral home, lovingly preserved and opened to guests. The house itself is a marvel of traditional Portugese architecture, built from mud, with an original 200-year-old roof still intact. Most fascinating of all, the wooden doors and windows feature translucent oyster-shell panes in place of glass It is a colourful European-style home nestled in the heart of Fontainhas, with charming red-tiled roof, overhanging balconies adorned with lush gardens, and a unique rooftop garden complete with a lotus pond and fish. Located just steps away from the historic St. Sebastian Church and Mario Miranda's iconic ‘Street in Fontainhas’, and few excellent cafe and restaurants, it offers a delightful slice of Europe of bygone era .. The place is decorated aesthetically and kept spotlessly clean. Bathroom is spacious and modern. Check-in / check-out was seamless even though we arrived very early in the morning. We worked from the guest house and Wi-fi was strong in the room as well as in the general area (roof top). And it is a pleasure to talk to Mrs Afonso - you are transported to another world of bygone days ..

Some places give you a room to stay, and some make you feel like you've discovered a little piece of the destination itself—Afonso Guest House was definitely the latter. Nestled in the heart of Fontainhas, it perfectly captures the charm and character of Goa's Latin Quarter. The room was spotless, comfortable, and thoughtfully maintained, with just the right balance of simplicity and warmth. What really stood out, though, was the hospitality. Jeanette was genuinely kind, welcoming, and happy to share local recommendations that made exploring the neighborhood even more enjoyable. One of my favorite moments was unwinding on the peaceful rooftop with the rain pattering on the rooftop. It felt like a hidden oasis away from the crowds. If you're looking for an authentic stay that feels more personal than a hotel, Afonso Guest House is a fantastic choice. I'd happily return the next time I'm in Goa.

Lovely home with lots of character in excellent location. Team was so welcoming and helpful. Everywhere - room/bathroom, common areas meticulously clean.
