About this house rental

PERFECT PLACE TO EXPLORE ICELAND. STUNNING VIEW TO THE GLACIER AND SEA
Kjarvalströð is a new luxury 'old style' privately owned cottage located in the spectacular and unique surroundings of Snaefellsnes on the west coast of Iceland. To Hellnar, it takes approx. 2.5 hours to drive from Reykjavik. The National Park is only 5 min away. Enjoy the magnificent views of the glacier Snaefellsjökull, the surrounding mountains and over the bay Faxaflói. The cottage is one of a few cottages designed as Icelandic houses from the 1920s. There are plenty of things to do and see in the area such as: beautiful hiking, whale watching, sailing around the many islands, historical places, bird watching, horse riding, skiing and sightseeing on the glacier.

If you are looking for a quiet area to relax or want to explore the unspoiled nature and many wonderful activities in the area, the cottage is the perfect place!

We were a group of 5 (husband, 2yr old daughter, and in-laws) and we had a great time at the cottage. It was clean, comfortable, and well equipped. Beds were comfortable but the angled ceiling in the smaller bedroom could make it difficult for taller people to get around (not a problem for me but it was awkward for my 6ft tall husband). The lockbox for key storage was tricky to open - you enter the code and pull the bottom. Dedicated parking space in front of the house was a plus. Beautiful area. Would definitely recommend!

Overall, we had a very nice stay here, although there were some frustrating aspects. The house is great—clean, bright, warm, cozy, and comfortable—and the kitchen is pretty well equipped. Hellnar is a lovely place and it was a good spot from which to explore the peninsula. However, the WiFi, washer, and dryer were not working, and these were important amenities for us. The WiFi never worked at all while we were there—I’m not sure what the issue was, but we couldn’t load a single page when connected to it. The host said that it usually works, which may be true, but it didn’t while we were there, and no one helped to resolve that over our four days. This was frustrating, since the cellular service was limited; sometimes I couldn't even message the host because the VRBO website wouldn't load on my phone. The washer apparently broke down shortly before our stay, but the host didn't communicate this proactively (if she had, we could have done laundry in Reykjavik). As it was, we found a single public machine 50 minutes away with a malfunctioning dryer. The host did try to help us and arranged for us to use the washer in a nearby house on our third day, and she gave us a small refund for our troubles. We appreciated all of this—I know she wanted us to have a good stay. And we did have a wonderful time on Snaefellnes! The peninsula is amazing and the house is great. Still, having to think about these issues repeatedly was not ideal.

The house has everything and makes one feel like home from the get go. The location was perfect for us with hiking opportunities at the doorstep. The little but is just, that we got a list of things to clean and how to clean and so on. That's basically fine, if one knows in advance. We checked our booking and could not find these instructions. We complied, because we wanted to feel someone else as home as we felt. Our suggestion: Just inform in advance and one can choose knowing. Despite that little inconvenience, we highly recommend a stay.
