About this cottage rental

The Duck House is the quintessential rural retreat from which to immerse yourself in the splendour of the Lake District. Perfectly situated in the picturesque village of Braithwaite, you will be ideally placed for exploring the multitude of local attractions, whilst enjoying the quiet countryside idyll in this homely and inviting bungalow.

As you enter there is a spacious hallway, opening up to a large bright triple-aspect living and dining room, complete with a traditional wood-burning stove in the fireplace, and plenty of space to sit and relax after a long day of adventures. The large dining table offers ample room to serve up a feast for all the family, and is easily accessible from the kitchen.

Being in a modern country style with the work surfaces finished in local green slate, the generously sized kitchen is very well-equipped. With full size fridge and freezer, a dishwasher, 5-ring gas hob and full oven, you have everything you need to easily make the family’s favourite cuisine at any time, whilst the breakfast bar complete with stools offers additional seating if needed. There is also a further utility cupboard with washing machine, tumble dryer and airing rack.

On through the kitchen you will find a bright and welcoming sun room, which has double doors opening out onto the patio with views across the garden and onto the hills beyond. Nicely furnished with rattan table and chairs, this makes a perfect space for your morning coffee whilst you make plans for the day.

The bedrooms are all light, airy and spacious with ample storage. The master bedroom has a king size bed, wall-mounted television for that holiday lie-in, and a modern en-suite bathroom with a smart shower enclosure, glass-surround basin, and toilet. The second bedroom has zip-link twin beds - normally made up as one king-size bed, although you can request twin beds if required. The third bedroom has one full size single bed.
The main family bathroom, is fully tiled, and offers a bath complete with mains shower over, basin and toilet.
There is high speed broadband internet connection available.

Outside, there is a very well-proportioned garden, with a sunny aspect, multiple features of interest and stunning views out across the fells. There is a large patio which can be accessed either through double sliding doors from the main living room or from the sun room. There are two sets of wooden table and chairs to seat four and two respectively, offering the opportunity to dine al fresco in the summer months.

A natural stream known as Chaplin’s Beck flows through the garden, often complete with ducks paddling along, giving the house its’ name. There are also beautiful planters and borders, making it a colourful and pretty place to sit and soak in the views whilst listening to the murmur of the water.

Please note that the garden is not enclosed from the road nor the stream, and as such children must be closely supervised at all times.
The village of Braithwaite offers many amenities, including a local shop, a tea room, excellent pubs, and multiple glorious valley walks right from the doorstep.
Only 2 miles away is the picturesque market town of Keswick, where you will find various café’s, independent shops and deli’s.

The surrounding area offers breath-taking scenery of the north-western Lake District, with Braithwaite being at the foot of the Newland’s Valley, and the well-known Buttermere Valley only a 15 minute drive away.
If you enjoy a spot of hiking, why not head up the fells to Grizedale Pike, or the Coledale Horseshoe for some unforgettable scenery. Also within easy reach is Bassenthwaite Lake, a known nesting site for Ospreys.

Please note this property does not accept pets at any time.

Great area for walking and nice clean accommodation. A bit noisy at times as close to new lands road.

The bungalow is nicely located near the village shop in a cul de sac of similar properties. It was clean and well appointed. We found the lack of any real view of the surrounding hills and mountains did mean that the quality of the accommodation was important and we were delighted by this and the effort that had been put into the small but lovely garden and the visiting birds (although no ducks were seen). The patio area at the back is a morning sun trap and the location was convenient to pop into Keswick for shopping or various activities - we did the Alpaca walk at Lingholm Estate, which was less than 10 mins away. It is also very close to Whinlatter Forest where we did the Forest Segways at Go Ape - again less than 10 minutes. It's a nice property in a central location.

This was our second time at The Duck House and we’ll definitely be back. It’s idyllic to have breakfast at the dining table and watch that garden birds outsidesit in the sunroom and listen to the pheasant calling outside. The village is lovely and it’s so easy to pop out to the shop, for a walkto one of the nearby restaurants. All three of us love coming here. It feels so homely. It’s exceptionally clean, yet cosy. It is well set up for families and Mary goes above and beyond to ensure guests are well catered for. I also appreciate the detailed instructions left around the house which take away any uncertainty. A boring point, but I was thrilled how quiet the washing machine was in its cupboard. We could use it overnight with no disturbance! I can’t think of any improvements!

I was delighted by the location at the edge of the village. Braithwaite is a beautiful place to be based with access to many different places. The quiet darkness provides ideal sleeping, especially after walking in the fells. Could there be a discount for a single occupant?
