About this cottage rental

Lilla Stenkulla is a charming traditional Swedish summer house on Stegesund, a peaceful car-free island in the Stockholm Archipelago just outside Vaxholm. The house sits directly by the sea on its own 2,000 m² waterfront property, with a private jetty, swimming access and beautiful water views in two directions.

Here you can enjoy the peace and seclusion of a classic Swedish archipelago island while still being within easy reach of Vaxholm – just 10 minutes away by boat – and central Stockholm, approximately one hour away by archipelago ferry.

Start the morning with a swim from your own jetty, followed by breakfast on the kitchen veranda overlooking the water and the morning sun.
On the south side of the house, a large terrace with dining area and barbecue is perfect for long summer lunches and dinners, with beautiful water views towards the southwest.

The mature 2,000 m² garden offers generous lawns and an abundance of summer flowers, including lilacs, rhododendrons and peonies.
There is plenty of space for children to play, for relaxing in the garden or simply finding a quiet spot in the shade with a book and the sea only a few steps away.

Lilla Stenkulla accommodates up to six guests and offers:
• Master bedroom with double bed
• Open upstairs landing with two single beds
• Sofa bed for two guests in the living room
• Fully equipped kitchen
• Bathroom with shower
• Living room opening directly onto the terrace
• Verandas and outdoor seating areas
• Barbecue
• Private jetty with direct access to the water for swimming
Bed linen and towels are included.

Stegesund is a peaceful car-free island known for its remarkably well-preserved collection of traditional Swedish archipelago villas dating from around the turn of the 20th century. The island's quiet gravel road is ideal for walking and jogging, and there is also a tennis court. Surrounded by water, you are never far from the sea.

Lilla Stenkulla forms part of the historic Stenkulla Gård estate but enjoys a secluded position on its own 2,000 m² waterfront property.

Stenkulla has been featured in several interior and lifestyle publications, including Sköna Hem, House & Antiques and Hyttemagasinet.

Despite its peaceful island setting, Lilla Stenkulla is surprisingly easy to reach. Regular archipelago ferries call at Stegesund several times a day. Vaxholm is approximately 10 minutes away by boat, while central Stockholm can be reached in around one hour by archipelago ferry.

Vaxholm – often referred to as the capital of the Stockholm Archipelago – has restaurants, cafés, bakeries, grocery stores and small shops, as well as historic Vaxholm Fortress. It is also an excellent starting point for exploring the wider Stockholm Archipelago by boat. Water taxis are available from Vaxholm, and parking is available on the mainland.

Lilla Stenkulla is for guests looking for more than simply a holiday rental. Wake up with the sea outside your window. Take a swim from the jetty before breakfast. Spend the day relaxing in the garden, exploring the archipelago or visiting Vaxholm, then return for dinner on the terrace overlooking the water. It is a chance to experience the simplicity and beauty of a traditional Swedish summer by the sea – on a quiet, car-free island, yet within easy reach of Stockholm.

Stenkulla Gård has been in Johan Nordquist's possession since 2002 and has gradually been upgraded and renovated to the treasure it is today. Here we celebrate Easter, Midsummer, birthdays. Numerous summer lunches have been held with family and friends. Johan is self-employed, married, with six children and lives in downtown Stockholm.

Said about Stenkulla: "It's hard to believe this place actually exists! Johan's place is a fairytale come true! The most unbelievably beautiful home with exceptional touches in the most incredible setting. Feel very lucky to have experienced it and very grateful to Johan for opening up his home to us." (- Alex, England)

All perfect, very nice holiday

A remote, peaceful little corner of the Stockholm archipelago. The perfect place to unwind, breathe fresh air and recharge the batteries. The sun God didn’t shine on us but we enjoyed rainy walks and cosy evenings, and in between showers managed to squeeze in some games of tennis on the nearby charming wooden court. We explored a few neighbouring islands on our little hire boat. Ate some wonderful food. And enjoyed welcoming smiles from everyone we met. We’ll all remember Lilla Stenkulla fondly.

We had a fantastic time at Johan’s small but very well equipped cosy cabin. I stayed with my husband and adult daughter. Views are truly beautiful. We rented a boat for the 9 days of our stay and used it to visit local islands or go shopping to Vaxholm. Everything was beautiful and Johan a very good host . Thank you!
