About this house rental
Let the oceanfront, gated retreat of Hilo Shangrila envelop you, with its private saltwater pool, hot tub, and covered lanai, all just a stone's throw from the peaceful Pacific. New air conditioning has been added in all bedrooms for total guest comfort. We are constantly upgrading our home with guest comfort in mind! Situated in the quiet, rural Hawaiian Paradise Park neighborhood, the home beautifully accommodates six guests.
Hilo Shangrila's airy, inviting living room and well-equipped kitchen feature soaring ceilings and a wall of glass doors to maximize ocean views and indoor-outdoor living. The home also boasts a dining space for six in full view of the ocean, an office space and additional sitting area, and a laundry area.
The master bedroom at Hilo Shangrila offers more vaulted ceilings, a king-size bed, a walk-in closet, and an ensuite bath with a walk-in shower. The welcoming guest bedroom also has high ceilings and a queen-size bed, as well as its own full bath just steps away, with a large tub and shower. The third sleeping area is adjacent to the master bedroom and has a pull out sofa.
The saltwater swimming pool has a breathtaking view of the brilliant blue Pacific. Its surrounding lanai provides the opportunity to soak up the warm Hawaiian sun or lounge in the shade. A covered hot tub is the perfect setting for enjoying cooler evenings, and a gas barbecue grill creates another option for meals at home.
This Puna-area home on the Big Island's east side allows easy access to attractions such as black-sand Kehena Beach, Pohoiki (aka Isaac Hale) Beach Park, and the Na Ala Hele hiking trail. In nearby Pahoa town, guests will find excellent seafood, Italian, Mexican and Filipino restaurants, along with a 50's-style coffee shop and a natural foods market. At the farmers' markets, take advantage of the opportunity to sample unusual local fruits (like passion fruit, star fruit, lychee, mango, and papaya); feast on a homemade crepe with bananas, chocolate and cream; try some homemade Thai noodles or salads; find a unique, hand-crafted piece from a Big Island artist; enjoy a soothing professional massage; or experience authentic Hawaiian music. We arrived a little early and the cleaners were still there and were accommodating and friendly. The house was clean and a beautiful view. The neighborhood was great! Friendly neighbors walking their dogs and we felt safe. There was a great little neighborhood farm stand with fresh fruit, eggs, and other goodies. The inside of the house was nice. Some parts were a little older and needed updated but overall it was pleasant. Wish the pool was heated and there were more lights inside. Beds were comfortable and inviting.

We had a great stay at Hilo Shangrila in Keaʻau. The views, pool, and hot tub were definite highlights, and there was plenty of space for our family of five to relax and unwind. The home was very clean on arrival, well-stocked for cooking meals, and had lots of storage. We especially loved the separate casita, which was a peaceful retreat for my wife and me.A few areas could use improvement. Since cell service is limited in Hawaiian Paradise Park, Wi-Fi is important, and while speeds were good when connected, it struggled with multiple users—an updated mesh system would help a lot. One guest room’s portable AC required frequent draining, and some cabinets and door hardware are showing their age. The main entry door is also quite sticky and can be loud for the nearby bedroom. We also noticed several lanai chairs were damaged and couldn’t be used, which limited outdoor seating.Overall, it’s a beautiful, spacious property with great amenities, but a minor interior refresh, better Wi-Fi, and replacing unusable lanai chairs would really elevate the experience, especially at this price point.

Stayed in this location 4-years ago, and things have definitely gone downhill. Maintenance of home doesn't seem to be a top priority. Cleaning fee, but when we arrived we found litter outside(used bandaid, straws, etc). Inside the toilet had obviously not been cleaned. Refrigerator died in the first 24-hrs after we arrived. We notified the management team, but it took more than 24-hrs for a replacement, causing the loss of food that we had purchased. We were reimbursed for the loss of food and given $18 for the inconvenience, but not reimbursed for having to eat out during this time. Vrbo was of no use at all with the issue. Not the best way to start a vacation. Location is beautiful and as described.
