Right, so. I booked Hotel Les Palmiers because it was cheap. And I want to be clear about that, because I feel like that's the bit where I went wrong. That's on me. That's my contribution to society. I wasn't expecting much. I was expecting, and I want to stress how low the bar was here, a bed. Possibly a door. What I got was... a situation. The room was basic. And when I say basic, I mean the Romans invented better. No aircon. Just a window. Which is fine, if outside is nice. It wasn't. It was the surface of the sun with a side order of humidity. The toilet was broken. Not "a bit wobbly" broken. Broken broken. Like it had given up. Like it had looked at the plumbing industry and said "no more." The bathroom was... have you ever seen a bathroom and thought, "this has seen things"? This bathroom had seen things. This bathroom had witnessed things. No hot water. No soap. Which, and I'm no hotelier, but I feel like soap is quite a low bar. Soap is the hello of hospitality. How much effort does it take to put a bit of soap in a room? You could nick it from another hotel. You could get it from a petrol station. It's SOAP. And the reception... ah, the reception. The reception staff have mastered a very specific skill, which is looking at you like you're speaking a language that has not yet been invented, and possibly never will be. You could say "my toilet is broken" and they'd look at you like you'd recited the periodic table backwards in Latin. "No hot water?" Blank. "Is there soap?" Suddenly they're an amnesiac who's never encountered the concept of a bathroom. And here's the thing. It was cheap. I KNOW it was cheap. I'm the one who booked it! I'm not standing here going "I paid four pounds and I expected the Ritz." I paid four pounds and I expected a functioning toilet. That's not greed. That's the bare minimum of civilisation. How much effort would it take to just... top the rooms up? Soap. A bit of hot water. A toilet that acknowledges its role in society. Not much! Twenty minutes! One bloke with a bucket! Anyway. One star. The one star is for the building still standing. Just about.
