Toledo Penthouse

The apartment is located in a very busy area of Naples, but – once you climb up all the steps! – feels like a quiet oasis above all that. We had a lovely time sitting on the quiet terrace and enjoying the view over the rooftops. The apartment was very clean and well-equipped. It was particularly nice to be able to wash and hang clothes from the rooftop rack. The host's recommendations for the best pizza restaurants in town were much appreciated – and followed!

One small flaw was that the toilet flush was a little temperamental, so sometimes we could hear running water overnight. The walls are quite thin between this and the next holiday apartment, so depending on who is staying there, you may be disturbed by them! Luckily this wasn't too much of an issue for us.

Location, host, cleanliness, cool rooftop. Everything great

The location was fantastic, really central to get around. The fact that you were on the 5th floor of the building meant that it was a bit quieter and you didn't have as much road noise. However, this came at a cost, 5th floor, 90 narrow steps and no lift. We made the conscious decision that when going out in the morning, we then stayed out until bedtime, which meant that we only had to face the ascent of the stairs once in a day lol. This absolutely didn't dampen our enjoyment or experience. Everything is walkable from the apartment location and there are some great restaurants in nearby lanes, to enjoy some lovely food. The apartment is very clean, spacious and you have all that you need. Additionally, there are some toiletries in the bathroom, which saves you bringing things like shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, if you are only there for a few days. Communication with the host was fantastic and she was great at providing recommendations of places to eat and things to do. There is a supermarket about a 5 min walk from the apartment. If planning to go on a tour by boat, it will take you around 15 min to walk to the port. I would absolutely recommend a food tour around the book and music quarters, as this is great value for money and you get to try some delicious local food. We also toured the San Genaro catacombs, which is about a 25 min walk from the apartment, but be warned, the walk is all uphill. Again, very good value for money. We took a tour to Pompeii as well, with the meeting point down at the port. Essentially, in a nutshell, this apartment is an ideal central point to get out and about in Naples. I would certainly recommend it. The roof terrace provides amazing views of Naples, from the palace to Vesuvius, though the spiral staircase isn't for the faint hearted if you don't have a head for heights lol.

Naples is very unclean, though we were aware of this before we traveled. There is a huge amount of rubbish in the streets, which is quite sad, but seems to be the done thing.

The location is excellent and the host responsive. Easily accessible via public transport and walkable to key food markets and restaurants as well as the departure point for ferries to Amalfi etc.

The access is completely unsuitable for those with suitcases unless they are young and fit. But even then the stairs are narrow, steep and dark. It would have to be the most awful arrival to any accommodation I have ever stayed in. The balcony and terrace are nice but not shaded and don't make up for the stairs. The sofa bed is very very uncomfortable and if it is being used there is nowhere to sit aside from at the dining table.
