Simeulue ("Simm-A-Loo") is one of the last frontiers of surfing in the Mentawai's, but growing steadily. Government and NGO money spent on the island's infrastructure after the 2004 tsunami means that it has one of the best roads in the archipelago, and a small but efficient modern airport for the once a day Lion/Wings one hour midday flight from Medan (invariably delayed for 30-60 mins, so don't opt for any tight transfers on the way out). (There is apparently a limited, non-daily, 10 hour ferry service which you can use to island hop down to Nias, but it goes via the mainland, with a three hour 'lay-over'.) Simeulue Surflodge is owned by a Dutchman and managed in his absence by A'an, a friendly and engaging young local guy, with perfect English. The accommodation is as shown in the pictures; with the cabanas being roomy and bright with AC, fans and large attached bathrooms and wonderful ocean views. (There is also a 'treehouse' set further back in the 'second row', with a view of the sea over the roof of the main house.) The double room in the main house would be for whoever drew the short straw if a large group was staying - or for those on an economy drive ! The great bonus here is the wonderful sea-water pool (I'd say large plunge pool rather than small swimming pool !), which is incredibly relaxing and a great way to end the day - especially if you're lucky enough to be travelling as a couple (which unfortunately I wasn't !) This makes up for the lack of a sandy beachfront (caused by the island 'tilt' after the 2005 earthquake). I would describe the food as adequate rather than note-worthy when I stayed. It might be worth being more 'proactive' in discussing what you might like to eat, rather than leaving it to 'pot luck' as I did, especially at breakfast time. There are a couple of other locally-run low key resorts along the coast hereabouts that do not list on Booking.
