Hantara Udawalawa

Excellent from start to finish. We booked a 2 night stay for my daughter's 11th birthday and staff were really accommodating. The food was excellent and they provided a birthday cake and balloons for her which made it extra special. Our safari was also organised by the hotel and our onward taxi to the coast so all in all a smooth experience. Our room was spacious and clean and the pool was pristine. The children loved spotting wildlife within the large grounds of the hotel, palm civets, a snake and monkeys.

Nothing not to like, the new accommodation that others have commented on is now complete and looks fabulous.

the outdoor bathroom takes some getting used to but it was fine in the end.

Excellent location in Udawalawa, just off the main road and only a short drive to both the safari gate and the Elephant Transit Home. The bungalows were clean, spacious, and beautifully designed in a safari style. The gorgeous outdoor bathroom even had its own tree! I have to confess that the outdoor bathroom was one of the main reasons I booked this property, and it definitely did not disappoint. The pool was clean and the surrounding grounds were very well maintained. We did not have breakfast as we were leaving early for safari, but they prepared a simple takeaway for us. I am vegetarian, and they made a special effort to prepare a separate meal for dinner especially for us, which was delicious and very much appreciated. The host/manager was a genuinely kind and thoughtful gentleman. He organised a tuk-tuk for us to visit the local shops and the Elephant Transit Home, which I highly recommend. They do amazing work there. Don’t skip the indoor information area, which explains more about elephants, the reasons many become orphaned, and the conservation work being done to help these beautiful creatures live alongside their human neighbours. He also arranged a fantastic private jeep safari for us at a very reasonable price. We saw many elephants (including babies), crocodiles, exotic birdlife, and much more. I would highly recommend this accommodation as a memorable and special part of your Udawalawa experience.

Very rustic location and quiet with outdoor shower and toilet. Staff were very friendly and helpful but no room cleaning or waste removal though over the 4 days which was a bit disappointing and my friend went and got a brush to sweep out as lots of leaves etc. Nice swimming pool only issue here was building works right next to chalet so unsightly and did spoil the rural ambience slightly. However we were there during Cyclone Ditwah and despite losing power, internet our hosts managed to feed us so big up on that. However I don’t recommend outside toilet during a cyclone or flying mangos.

No room cleaning during 4 days. Other issues were outside owners control due to Cyclone Ditwah. View spoilt by building site but no construction happening when we visited.
