The Cottage

The cottage is a lovely place to stay. Contained within the grounds of Barrock house it was a fantastic setting to enjoy a quiet, exploratory holiday in the Scottish Highlands. The cottage its self is only a 25 minute drive from John o Groats and wasn't much further away from amenities in Wick and Thurso! With its full sized kitchen, living room and bedroom it truly was a cosy place to live for a week. All utensils for the kitchen you'd need and a cosy sofa for two with a smart TV for movie nights. Were even a few jigsaws provided for added fun =D The lady who owns the site was very friendly and keen to ensure you had a comfortable and enjoyable holiday and offered plenty of knowledge of the local area! A small welcome gift of crackers, wine and fudge was amazing. Her dogs also make for a lovely housewarming party when they came to visit for a fuss! They were the friendliest staff team we've ever encountered! :) Watch out for the roaming turkeys? too :D funny creatures. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking to get away from the hustle of the more touristy destinations. Great for dog lovers and those who like exploring.

A lovely little cottage in a really peaceful setting. We were staying here while our bathroom was being renovated so werent typical guests as live nearby. It was perfect for our needs though as the wifi was good for us to work and there was lots of space outside for us to walk our dogs. There isnt a proper shower but I prefer a bath so it wasnt an issue. The cottage is very traditional in style and had lots of character and it was very warm and cosy. Their black dog was very friendly!

We messaged the owners after booking to see if we could change dates as our renovation dates changed, but didnt get a response so not sure if they see the Booking.com messages. We didnt see the owners either so it would have been helpful to have something in the cottage manual about where it was ok to walk within the grounds. We didnt want to intrude on anyone's privacy so werent sure. This was a minor issue though.

This is a wonderfully quiet place, very remote, excellent for exploring the far north-east of Scotland. Beautifully warm, and plentiful hot water. So nice to have welcoming Christmas treats and decorations

No shower. The kitchen and bathroom are quite old-fashioned but I like that sort of thing and everything we needed was there. The host quickly supplied a hair-drier.

Lovely setting on private estate amongst woodland.

No electric shower, just rubber hose to fit on taps for hand held shower. Strong smell of damp on entering building which aggrevated my asthma. Sofa and chair in lounge very old and uncomfortable, could feel the wooden frame beneath upholstered seats.
