Sheraton Carlton Nuernberg

Excellent location for sightseeing.

It is a measure of how highly I regard this superlative hotel that, having bedded down in Nürnberg on three separate occasions for four-day spells apiece, I have lodged at the Sheraton Carlton in each instance and wouldn’t dream of staying anywhere else. This property couldn’t be more advantageously located: just a two-minute walk from the city’s main train station, and then just a two-minute walk in the other direction to the Old Town and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. The staff generously allowed me an early check in and let me book my favourite room, which, like all of the wonderful units in this hotel, featured comfortable carpeting rather than cold tile or parquet flooring, was cozy yet spacious, perfectly climate controlled, and, in the case of my favorite unit, opened onto a balcony with a breathtaking view of the Imperial Castle. The hotel staff are the friendliest and most welcoming I’ve ever encountered, every bit as accommodating to backpacking travellers as they are to elite, business-class clientele. Breakfast is of top-tier, star-restaurant quality, featuring staples such as gourmet eggs and bacon, along with the unique Röstla smoked sausages for which Nürnberg is renowned. Notable amenities include spa services and a rooftop patio with a magnificent view, while the hotel’s lightning-fast, same-day laundry service merits special praise: my clothes not only ended up pristine clean but smelling wonderful; better, in fact, than their condition prior to my journey. Above all, it is the feeling of Gemütlichkeit that I experience every time I stay here that keeps me coming back. (In fact, for this most recent trip, I originally considered using a different city in Franconia as a home base, but the promise of another perfect stay at the Sheraton Carlton brought me back to Nürnberg.) Take it from a three-time return guest: whatever your price point, if you wish your stay in this city to be rewarding and relaxing, then this is the place to lodge.

A 6 AM breakfast hour would be much preferable to the current 6:30 start time, that extra half hour granting a traveller more flexibility in his schedule and making it easier to catch early trains for day trips. But that is a minor point. With its immaculately clean, cozy, and spacious rooms, its top-tier breakfast, its unrivalled customer service, and above all, its proximity to both Nürnberg’s main station and its greatest museum, this is the top accommodation choice by far, not only for a stay in Nürnberg but for a sojourn anywhere in Franconia.
