First, the baths. Relaxing in a hot bath under the open sky, surrounded by stunning nature and a sense of complete seclusion, was truly a unique experience. We were incredibly lucky to be the only guests in the entire hotel during our stay, so we had both outdoor baths entirely to ourselves. Both breakfast and dinner were exceptional. Each meal was an assortment of different Japanese dishes that would be difficult to discover and try on your own. Everything was prepared and presented to the highest standard, and the kaiseki-style serving made it feel even more special. And finally, staying in such a grand traditional Japanese room was unforgettable. It felt as if we were living in one of the palaces we had been visiting throughout Japan.
Really minor inconveniences: episodic smell of fuel exhaust near the baths. No place to hang towels in the room

Incredible experience. A beautiful and historic building deep in the mountains of Japan, in Aichi prefecture. From the attentive check-in experience to the spacious room, everything felt luxurious without being showy. The stand-out was certainly the exceptional dinner, comprising over half a dozen courses of fresh, local and seasonal dishes. The two rotenburo (outdoor baths) were both wonderfully relaxing. The staff went out of their way to make our stay special, not least in the pick-ups and drop-offs at the train station. There are also nice walks by the river. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.
