Château d'Avanton

As described this is a bed and breakfast in a fabulous renovated 16th century chateau. (The electrics and plumbing are a bit more recent.) It’s a unique place to stay but don’t expect 5 star luxury. It’s all original features and furniture with stone walls and floors. It’s absolutely gorgeous in a dusty and historical kind of way. We had Donjon (called dungeon but actually up 5 flights of stone stairs in the top tower with then more turret stairs) which was a 2 floor apartment. Bedroom, sitting room, bathroom, and a little kitchenette. The bathroom is down the turret stairs from the bedroom (the lights come on automatically) and they are steep. There is a bannister. The bed was very comfortable for us, quite soft which we like. WiFi good. Views and surrounding countryside lovely and peaceful. Owner is lovely, very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is a basic French breakfast and help yourself.

Improving / replacing the kitchenette and bathroom would make the Donjon room much more comfortable overall. They are both very basic and tatty. There are residents of an eight-legged nature and they liked to come out to socialise in the evenings. I wasn’t entirely happy about this, particularly the one that wanted to share the bed, but it’s hard to see how it can be prevented without entirely changing the nature of the property.

Great location

We stayed here a number of times a decade ago but little has changed. Kitchen and bathroom looking a bit tired now.We have always made our own lunch and evening meal here but found washing up awkward as there is no plug for the sink I know it's a niggle and we usually carry a temporary plug but forgot it this time.
