Had a relaxing time.. it was fun

My daughter and I arrived really early at around 8am and so we weren’t expecting to check in immediately or even any time soon. But the staff were never prepared to give an estimate of when we could check in and when they did say 15 minutes it ended up being an hour plus at around 1pm. It would have been better if they told us at the beginning that it’s likely to be several hours so that we can plan accordingly rather than wait in the hope that a room would be available soon. The hotel didn’t seem to be well cleaned. There were several areas that were just away from the most accessible areas that seem to have not been cleaned for a long time. Examples were insects and cobwebs around above the hotel room door entrances, dust around some furniture and wall surfaces, and bedsheets that were a bit stuffy and that didn’t smell particularly fresh.. The front desk staff whilst trying to be friendly didn’t really seem fully at ease and never went beyond reasonable service levels. The front door staff tried to engage in conversation, but their English was usually so bad that it was hard to understand what they were saying so after a couple of attempts I’d just smile and rely with ‘yes’. In any other reasonably small hotel I’ve always noticed the presence of someone in charge at the hotel guiding staff and/or occasionally interacting with guests. I didn’t notice anyone that looked like that. Someone with experience is needed to observe and interact with staff and guests in order to keep the hotel standards high and it doesn’t seem to be happening. The gym, whilst reasonably well equipped was quite dirty and the handles of all the exercise machines smelled very bad. My daughter spent 20 minutes cleaning every single handle with wet wipes, including all the dumbbells! Whilst I was excited there was a snooker table, it has seen much better days and is only barely in a playable condition. I play snooker occasionally and I’d recommended the hotel gets the table slate replaced, pocket ball holders repaired and invest in proper sized snooker balls (the balls they had were a bit smaller than full sized balls). The positives in my stay were: 1) the room size was large, but there was some water seepage into the tiles near the front door which made the tiles wet when you stepped on them. 2) the breakfast staff were attentive, but their uniforms were pretty scruffy especially around the sleeve area with plenty of old food stains and buttons hanging by a thread. 3) the tour guide was friendly and gave a good free guide of the local area. 4) the location was convenient and well situated, although there was some road noise at night which is hard for an older hotel building to block out. The hotel provided good earplugs so they’d obviously had that feedback. Overall, if it was a 3 star hotel I’d say it was a good experience. But for a 5 star hotel that charges 5 star hotel prices it was far from expectations.
