Sonu has a fantastic local knowledge of Varanasi and was always there to help if we had any questions or needed any advice. He also owns boat's so we were able to do an early morning river cruise without having to haggle down on the Ghats. we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Marigold Guest House and I will be back with my next travel group soon I hope.

Location is in a little maze of alleys near the river and one of the big palaces.

It was more money for a worse room than we quickly found the next day. The windows over the room doors are open-air so every sound carries. Because there was a festival I was out late both nights and the front door is locked so I had to wake the owner from the alley to get in the house at 11pm. The room was small and I frequently noticed musty smells from the bathroom. When I asked to check out after two nights in my 3 night Booking.com (not pre-paid) reservation the host insisted I pay for the third night anyway and charged me an extra 5% for using credit card when the usual in India is 3%. I found a nicer, more private room in a hotel nearby with a rooftop restaurant even closer to the river with a 24 hour front desk for a little less money. I would only stay at Marigold if you are craving a mid-budget bohemian tourist experience.
