Nice stay in Franschhoek

The winery is beautiful and offers great services, there is a lot of activities offered that you can do from the Estate. The Retreat Cottages are clean and are very spacious with a good layout. For families, the self-catering options are nice, for us it wasn’t the right fit.

The Retreat is not located at the estate but 3,5 km away from it. Our cottage was right next to the parking lot and not close to the pool or other facilities as the photos suggested. The restaurant is ok, but the food is average and service slow.

Disappointing Experience During Our Stay

Dear Sir or Madam, I would like to formally express our disappointment with our recent stay at Boschendal Farm Estate, which unfortunately did not meet our expectations. First of all, the photos and descriptions shown on the website do not accurately reflect the actual accommodation and facilities provided. Upon arrival, our rooms were located quite far from the parking area, and the entire path consisted of loose gravel, making it impossible to pull suitcases. The hotel staff did not assist with luggage transportation to the room. As we were traveling with children and several suitcases, this situation was extremely stressful. At check-out, it was raining heavily and the same situation occurred again, with no assistance offered. Additionally, the website advertises several activities for children; however, upon arrival we discovered that all these activities are located in a different area, requiring guests to drive there. This information is not clearly communicated in advance. There was also no guidance provided about available activities at the hotel, making it difficult to understand what could actually be done during our stay. Breakfast was served only from 8:00 to 9:30 am, which is a very limited time window, especially for families with children. Furthermore, the breakfast offering itself was quite basic and below expectations for a property of this level. Overall, the experience was disappointing and did not correspond to what is presented online. I felt it was important to share this feedback so that future guests do not face the same issues. We asked to check in early to let our 2 year old son sleep in the afternoon. We never heard back and found out upon arrival that early checkin was not possible. Despite our early arrival we could only check in 15 mins later (3.15pm) because we were told staff was still preparing our engagement surprise. However there was no surprise. I asked the manager later and he mentioned that it was probably hidden so we would find it in the days to come. We never did. I asked it again on the day of departure and we were told the engagement surprise would come but it didn’t. Also upon arrival we were asked if we needed help with our luggage. Had I known we had to walk to the farthest house with all our luggage I would of course have said yes. If I would have been the staff and see a family that has waited for 1,5 hours with a child that needs to go to sleep and a wife that’s pregnant (which I mentioned at some point) I would have simply carried the luggage to the room instead of asking. I would cover all land at the back side of the apartments with grass for children to play (some lower number apartments have it already).

Fantastic stay and an amazing venue.

The room was excellent, everything was of a high quality, the beds were extremely comfortable. The showers and bathrooms were good too. We didn't use the kitchen facilities but the fridge was of a good size and it had everything you'd expect (microwave, kettle, coffee machine).

The only negative of our stay was there was a couple of minor miscommunications which negatively impacted us, we only got given one travel cot initially, so needed to request and wait for another, which was little stressful with two little ones. On another occasion, the shuttle bus took us to the wrong destination on the estate, and we had a 15 minute wait to get another shuttle bus back to the correct destination. Both things can happen, of course, and they were very apologetic on both occasions, but it probably because this estate is a big beast, handling a huge amount of guests and visitors every day, so just be aware that these kind of mishaps may happen but they were always dealt with etc.

A perfect honeymoon stay in a stunning estate

Everything at Boschendal is wonderful - the staff, the stunning surroundings and grounds, the wine and food, and the accommodation. We stayed in a Small Werf Cottage - perfect for a couple, cute and cosy and quietly tucked away in the trees under the mountains, but just a few minutes' walk to the main areas of the estate. The pictures don't really do this place justice - it's a wonderful, relaxing place to visit. A few notable mentions: The breakfast is amazing - great choices, big portions of great quality food, lovely coffee and juices, and really lovely service. Wine-tasting is obviously a must - Boschendal wines are delightful, especially the MCC and several of the reds. The farm shop is really lovely, as are the courtyards and general grounds. We also recommend the werf picnic which is delicious and so cute on the lawns! We'll be back 100%!

Overpriced

The breakfast was great.

When i arrived the staff was very welcoming but didn’t explain anything about how everything works. Where is the pool and different spaces, she didn’t tell us we were going to have to take little shuttles to the rooms because they are too far away. Also, none of the plugs worked in the room. And they were all different but none worked for our kind nor our adapters. Also, we were on our honeymoon and ask for a reservation in the hotel restaurant which they told us TWICE it was closed and we walked by and it was open.

Lovely unit, decent size with all the necessary amenities Stunning views from the unit and from breakfast locale Seamless and beautiful integration with nature (eg walks from unit / vines etc around unit)

(1) Shower unit did not drain (2) We received an email ahead of the stay indicating that there would be a welcome package / amenities for us upon arrival (which in the past was s something like some fresh goods from their shop and a bottle of wine) -when we arrived to the unit, there was nothing except two apples. Think the welcome basket was forgotten. (3) We had arranged with Retreat reception for a shuttle to transport us to a wedding offsite and confirmed it twice - the shuttle never arrived, and there was absolute confusion from Boschendal (initially indicating there was nothing arranged). On top of this, the staff then was not able to make an alternate plan - resulting in us very, very nearly missing the wedding!

We stayed at the retreat cottages. Beautiful setting with amazing views. Service was amazing - staff always helpful. Good breakfast with lots of options. Comfortable beds and good sized rooms and bathrooms. Nice touches like wine on arrival and a steamer for clothes! Anything we needed they were happy to help us with.

Would have loved to have a proper pool at the retreat cottages. The pool is an organic one which is fine, but would be great if they could give it a bit of a clean every now and then, as it’s never used.

Wonderful stay in the most beautiful environment

We had a nice cottage with a beautiful surrounding and a stunning landscape. We stayed for two nights with a family of four and had just a wonderful time enjoying the winery, the food and the beautiful area. We will definitely come back!

Recommend the included garden tour which was very informative on a wide range of topics. Be aware that the various parts of the estate are very far apart although shuttle service is available

All hospitality. Everyone was kind. Additionally, the welcome message and items we had requested in advance were appropriately placed. The family from Japan was deeply impressed, and it became an unforgettable trip.

The shower room drain was clogged, and the water wasn't flowing properly. The living room and kitchen were very dimly lit, so I would like you to provide brighter lighting.

Luxurious and quiet mountain setting.

Lovely retreat in the countryside - a few miles from the main road. Beautiful views of the mountains. Pretty garden and nice restaurant and pool. Nice log burner in lounge.

We stayed in August (winter) and there was no heating in the bathroom. It really felt cold in there. Air con in bedrooms worked though. Be aware that you are a drive away from Boschendal winery. You need a car.

The lodge was beautiful, very clean and had all the facilities we needed. The views out the back were stunning. The staff were all friendly and very helpful, arranging the complimentary transport to the other Deli and Treehouse (kids club).

The house exceeded our best expectations by far. It is beautifully situated with a stunning view. The house is very well equipped and comfortable. Personnel are very friendly and service delivery is absolutely professional. I cannot recommend the Vineyard House more strongly! We will in future like to visit this property annually! Absoluetly fantastic, and a privilege to stay there!

Boschendaal - June 2025

Orchard cottage was very clean, well appointed and perfect for our family. With electric blankets and an indoor fireplace, we were comfortably warm in the middle of winter. Outdoor braai facilities were on the verandah and we had an unlimited view of the virgin bush & surrounding mountains. Breakfast was served in the Werf restaurant and was consistently of a high standard over our 5 day stay. Staff throughout the estate were excellent!

Magical scenery, restful and comfortable.

Unfortunately the house didn’t have everything we expected in the kitchen mainly - no tea towels (drying cloths), no oven gloves, no braai equipment (tongs, braai gloves). We requested housekeeping to bring these over which they did but only after a few hours. The lights on the one side of the kitchen were not working either. Also the underfloor heating in the main bathroom did not work. The WiFi also stopped working and so we couldn’t watch tv the one night when we were trying to watch an early family movie…and we waited a few hours but technician hadn’t arrived by the time our son had to go to bed. It came back on later that evening so we called to let reception know they didn’t need to send the technician anymore. The hot tub was also quite dangerous for kids as there was nothing protecting the heating element so they could easily burn themselves.

What a great stay!

Simply AMAZING - we regret not staying at least a couple of days in Boschendal to really enjoy the place. One night is not enough. They were all gentle and provided great service. Breakfast at The Werf (provided to guests) is awesome. The room is very comfortable and has everything you need to have a good time in there.

I asked for a meal in the room from the Retreat Restaurant and it was a bit disappointing. Restaurants could be open for a little longer too.

Shower pressure and drainage in Champagne cottage was disappointing Outside heated tub was rubbish, staff came started fire and left - fire went out and it took 5 hours of fire to even heat it to warm. Buy the genuine thing - this was a low quality imitation and spoilt the holiday
