Gambrinus Hotel

Nice hotel and excellent breakfast. Close to termini train station.

Located in a nice district of Rome near authentic trattoria and Roman bars, about 15 minutes walk from the railway station. We had a lovely, well appointed room on the top floor, which is perhaps why it was quiet. The staff were professional but approachable and friendly.

Well away from the tourist hot spots which means a fair bit of travelling every day.

Although I reserved a single room that was supposed to be fit with a single bed, the room was actually a double room with a wide King-size bed. In the truth this was the only positive surprise since the other remarks were mostly negative. The breakfast (included in my reservation) was very poor except than for the corn-flakes and Muesli offer that was very rich and various with a good choice of dry-fruit and nuts. In the room there is a Lavazza coffee-macine with a couple of complimentary coffee caps (but not original from Lavazza...) and also in the fridge a couple of mineral waters were kindly offered by the hotel. The wi-fi connection was stable and quite fast. The shower was very large and although my room was at 1st floor facing the street, it was incredibly silent, probably thanks to the thick soundproof glass.

The room - although fit wih an unexpected double-bed was extremely small: on the "desk" where I had to work due to a call scheduled on earl morning there was not space even for a 13" notebook (I had to remove the coffee machine that occupied it entirely) and instead of a chair I had to seat on a "Pouf" very low and rather uncomfortable. Also in the bathroom the space was really minimum: an eventual beauty-case should be left in the room because there is no space where keeping it above the basin. The hot water takes up to 5 minutes before arriving to the shower: I feared that a failure occurred to the boiler... but after leaving it open for 5' the water arrived. The Breakfast was extremely poor and, apart the corn-flakes corner, very "industrial", more typical for a 2-stars motel than for an alleged 4 star: only a couple of types of cheese, bread just in slices (necessary toasting before eating), no fresh juices, marmalade in big bottles. Furthermore the breakfast is served in the basement in a very crowded room without windows nor natural light. The lift (only one) was permanently occupied also because apart the guests it's used also by the staff (in the morning I found it completely filled of bottles of water to be transported at the upper level...)

Our room had a beautiful view of the embassy courtyard but we were lucky. It was very clean and comfortable.

We felt that the renovations didn’t match the hotel. Ie old and modern together.
