Great location in the historic center of Split. Staff helped us with luggage and were helpful in other ways. Rooms were comfortable. Restaurant one of the best during our 8 days in Croatia. Lamb 🙂

Excellent location and great staffs!

Quick walk to bus station and the ports. The staffs are super sweet and helpful. Breakfast is great. We went to the restaurant to try their desserts and they were delicious! Highly tecommend!

The hotel's location is fantastic—tucked just off the main street lined with restaurants and right beside the Diocletian Palace. Everything you need is within a few minutes’ walk, making it incredibly convenient for exploring the city. The room was impeccably clean—absolutely spotless—and offered a very comfortable stay. Breakfast was another highlight, with a wide variety of freshly prepared options served hot upon arrival, ensuring both quality and freshness. Overall, this hotel is highly recommended and will undoubtedly be our top choice for our next visit to Split.

Mario and Toma treated us like royalty from the reception meeting and the 4 course breakfasts! They went above and beyond, providing us with a take away breakfast on the last day due to an early departure time for us. I would highly recommend this property!!

Best location, best hospitality, best food, and overall best place to stay in Split!

We had the most fantastic stay! The location can’t be beat; you are right in the heart of old town Split, a 5 minute walk from all attractions/tours. The hospitality of the staff is hands down the best we have ever experienced and we travel a lot. The staff went out of their way to make our stay an exceptional one. We were greeted with them taking our bags from the parking lot to our room and given a welcome drink and antipasto platter as the owner went over a map of the city and highlighted the must sees of Split. Breakfast wasn’t a continental buffet, but a sit down, made fresh to order for you breakfast in their restaurant. I can’t speak highly enough of Makarun Heritage Rooms; you won’t go wrong staying here!

Amazing days with 5-star hospitality

Japan, where I’m from, is known for its high level of hospitality, but this place went beyond that! All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with any request. It truly felt like being at home. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a beautiful plate of treats and a warm introduction to the history and attractions of Split — such a lovely touch. The breakfast was also amazing, starting with croissants, egg dishes, a cheese platter, and even desserts. I will definitely come back here the next time I visit Split, and I highly recommend this place to everyone!

A wonderful stay with amazing service, helpful staff, and great food – highly recommended.

The service was fantastic – the staff were incredibly kind and helpful. Extra shoutout to Toma🫡 They assisted us with our luggage to and from the taxi/bus station, gave excellent recommendations for restaurants and things to do in Split and the surrounding area, and always made us feel welcome. The breakfast, food, and drinks were also really good.

Amazing

Loved the location and the history, Ivan and Marco went out of their way to make my stay amazing starting with staff to collect my luggage (and me) from the bus station to a transfer to the airport. They provided a breakfast hamper the first morning as I was leaving early on a day trip and wouldn't be able to attend the daily breakfast which is incredible. The room was quiet even though it looked over the restaurant. I highly recommend Makarun for anyone staying in Split.

Fantastic place to stay and we will be back!

A wonderful place to stay in the heart of Split Old Town! The rooms are lovely, beds very comfy but what makes it so special are the amazing staff who are very kind and super hospitable. We were sorry we’d pre booked another restaurant for dinner: we’d definitely love to eat there next time, but the three course breakfast was wonderful. Thoroughly recommend this lovely place to stay :)

Wonderful stay 100% recommend

Ran by the most friendly, helpful and thought staff! As soon as we arrived we were so well taken care of and gave great tips over a cool drink. The room was clean modern and very comfortable- especially the bed. The restaurant is delicious, loved that they had a vegetarian tasting menu. Finally the breakfast is wonderful, so much, so delicious. Highly recommend

A very special stay

This was a very special stay. From the moment we were greeted by our host Ivica and he shared information and history about Spilt over a glass of wine in the Makarun restaurant, we knew we were in for a treat. There are only a few rooms as part of the restaurant (which is very highly regarded in the town) and we felt as though we were treasured guests. The location is incredible, right in the heart of old town. The breakfast every day was delicious and the night we ate in the restaurant was one of the highlights of our European trip. From the food to the service, it was outstanding. Not cheap, but worth it! The room was lovely, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was large. But it was the service from everyone that made this stay so special. I wouldn’t hesitate to reccomend it and hope we can come back one day. Thanks Ivica and team!

The NICEST, most thoughtful staff and best location for solo trip!

The staff were really nice and helpful. Mario even sat down with me and went through a map and showed me where my booked tours started from. When one of my tours got cancelled, he even helped me find another one to replace it. I really felt like they wanted to take care of me and this goes a long way when you're traveling alone in a new country. I also loved the fact that both mornings of my stay I left before breakfast and each night they packed me a huge bag of food for the next day with sandwich, fruit, drinks, yogurt, cookies and other other treats! I thought that that was a lovely touch! The room was also very nice and clean. The location is excellent to explore the Old Town. I felt very safe as a solo traveller. Communication and directions prior to arrival were excellent.

Lovely stay!

I had a lovely stay at Makarun Heritage Rooms. It was more like a Bed and Breakfast experience, with personalised service. I particularly appreciated Ivan and Tia’s warm hospitality, and the gentleman who helped me with my luggage. The location was perfect for walking around the main sights and getting the ferry to Hvar.

Very minor things such as noise from either restaurant staff or other guests late at night going up and down the stairs outside my room. But these are the sorts of things you experience at many hotels.

Perfect location in Split - within minutes of the main strip of restaurants, bus/taxi rank and walking distance to view point. The hotel has its own great restaurant too with delicious breakfasts and great coffee. Makarun is run by truly excellent staff who went out of their way to accommodate for the needs of our family and gave us great recommendations for the best restaurants / beaches too. This was all much appreciated.

We didn’t mind this but there are about 3-4 flights of very steep stairs to get to the top room, where we stayed. All our bags were carried up and down by their incredible staff though.

A good hotel doesn’t need to be perfect — it just needs to be honest.

Great location in the very center of the old town — everything is within walking distance. The staff met us upon arrival and helped carry our luggage up the stairs, which was nice (even though we’re usually not fans of such attention — still, it was a kind gesture). One of the team members literally rushed up the stairs with two heavy suitcases — I had to tip him, he honestly earned it. When we arrived, one of the staff pulled out a city map and pointed out some nearby landmarks, restaurants, and beaches. I’m not usually into that kind of guided suggestion, but in fairness, it was a thoughtful and helpful gesture. Breakfasts were served à la carte in the inner courtyard. Nicely prepared, tasty, especially during the first days.

Despite the warm welcome, a few things didn’t quite match the perfect image from the reviews. There was leftover trash in the room at check-in — several empty plastic bottles and even a box with picked-over chicken bones. Not a huge issue, but certainly not a great first impression. The building doesn’t have a lift. It’s just 3–4 floors, and we stayed on the second — but we saw an elderly couple struggling with the stairs, which seemed like an unpleasant surprise for them too. The staircase is quite steep and narrow, making luggage a hassle. There were some small maintenance issues (like a broken light switch and limited hot water), and no proper reception or lounge area — more like a private guesthouse than a hotel. Breakfast, while tasty, didn’t change at all during the week. Staff would bring the same items by memory without asking, which made us feel awkward about requesting small changes. The entrance is via a narrow alley next to a restaurant, where staff often smoked near the door — not ideal. I initially left a quiet 8/10 without a written review, but a few hours later received a personal WhatsApp call from someone at the hotel. That had never happened to me before — and it reinforced the feeling that anything below a perfect score might not be welcome here. It reminded me that many guests likely write their reviews under emotional pressure or influenced by all the glowing 10s. Going forward, I’ll be more cautious with places that have only perfect ratings — no hotel is perfect for everyone.

Great staff however it did not live up to our expectations

Ivan our concierge was amazing and the highlight for us for staying at this accomodation. He gave us lots of good advice on what to do and went out of his way with great service. Breakfast was also very good! Unfortunately we had 2 early mornings so only got to enjoy the breakfast once during our 3 night stay.

A few things that could be improved - We had dinner in the restaurant on our first evening. The service was great but the food was lacking. It was overpriced compared to other restaurants in the area and the food was inedible. We did not enjoy the mains at all however the bread wine and desert was good! There is no black out blinds so very bright in room at night. Hot water does not even last 5 minutes so need to have very quick showers. Our room was not cleaned on our first day even though we were out from 7am to 5pm. We had to go downstairs to request clean towels and have the rubbish removed.

Excellent stay from beginning to end!

The best service and hospitality I have had in Europe! Mario was the most welcoming host, provided escorted parking services for me which can be a hassle when traveling, but he made it so easy. Extremely hospitable, made time to talk with me and gave a brief history of the city and things to see. He went above and beyond I cannot say it enough. Delicious breakfast too! I have only the highest recommendation for this hotel I would only stay here when in Split!

Great location and wonderful staff!

Makarun is centrally located in the old part of town and perfect for sightseeing. It’s tricky to find so it was helpful that they were very responsive and met us at our taxi and helped with luggage. The breakfast each morning was delicious and made to order - they even put together a to-go breakfast for us to take when we did a day excursion to Plitvice. Ivan and Tea and everyone made us feel welcome. Our room was small but had everything we needed - comfortable bed, air conditioning, small refrigerator, bathroom with all toiletries.
