About this house rental

Authentic Greek mountain house, built back in the rocks, deafening silence due to location in abandoned village.
Surrounded by nature, with a beautiful view of the sea and mountains. To reach via donkey path, 150 meters from parking at church at the beginning of the donkey path.
Our house is located in the village of Ano (above) -Tobra, Ανο Τομπρα, in the "outside-Mani", the middle finger of the south of the Peloponnese at about 475 m. Above sea level, 13 km from the sea. The coordinates: 36 ° .46 'N / 22 °. 26.5 'O. In clear weather you can see the island of Kythera! The house is built in the style of the Mani with stacked natural stones. It probably dates from the end of the 19th century, the foundation with the camara, καμαρα, and the apothiki, αποθηκη, is even older. The walls are 80 cm thick and finished with clay and lime on the inside. In 2015, all walls were newly joined and the entire roof replaced in original style and well insulated. Because the house is built against the mountain there are access doors on two levels. On the mountain side is the front door that gives access to the upper floor. Downstairs at the front are the two doors of the apothiki (workshop) and the camara. Inside, the two floors are connected by a stone staircase. Under the camara is a cisterna, a private water reservoir with 17000 liters of water. There is water through the Greek water pipe, but it sometimes falls out and then we can fall back on our own water supply.
Due to the thick walls of 80cm it is quite cool in the house in hot periods, especially in the camara it is wonderful to stay and sleep. Due to the high location it is always about 3 degrees cooler than on the coast.

The nature around our house:
Our house is on the edge of a virtually deserted village.
Only a few weeks in the summer and during the olive harvest in winter there are some residents in the village. Our house is the only house that is regularly inhabited. This gives animals free play. You can find all kinds of animals that you normally do not come across in their natural environment. We continue to amaze and rejoice: foxes, badgers, pine martens, weasels, owls, jays, various birds of prey, butterflies in all colors, lizards, geckos, turtles, etc. However, some caution is required and this rich animal life requires a little more alertness than you may be used to in the Netherlands at home. Outside closed footwear is recommended and it makes sense to leave no food left around and in the house.
At night there are often seven sleepers active; they are harmless and do not enter, but can sometimes make noise on the roof or in the walls. In order not to be bothered by insects, there are mosquito nets in the house above all beds.

It was an incredible experience to live alone in an abandoned village in Mani. You feel far away from everything and it is a nice feeling. The nearest beach is about 25 minutes driving. The house is always fresh downstairs in the main bedroom. For the persons who like to hike, unfortunately, a fire occured in august 2021 so it is not very pleasant to walk in the countryside around. Mosquitoes could be a challenge also sometimes during the evening (even in the house). The views from the house are breathtaking. If you like to stay in a quiet place, the house is definitely for you.

The house was exceptionally beautiful and in traditional keeping with the Mani architecture. Extremely quiet and remote with fabulous views. Great exploring and the most important for us was the wild flowers - exceptional in April. The house is very cosy and well equipped and even broadband is available despite it's remoteness. Jokke and Tonno were great hosts with easy and helpful communication. Gythio, the local town is about 30mins away (supermarkets, tavernas, petrol station etc). No local shopping facilities up in the hills. We tended to eat out for lunch and ate at home in the evenings. If you want to connect with nature and this little known but beautiful part of Greece we really do recommend this property. If you want bright lights and discos this is definitely not for you. Profound peace and quiet is what you'll get in generous measure.

If you wish to be far off the tourist tracks and you love a peaceful environment in the middle of the nature of Peloponnes region, then you are at the right place! The stone house is well equipped with everything you might need for a week with your friends and family, including three beds in three different rooms (the smaller beds are also 120cm large beds!), a wonderfully equipped kitchen, several terraces heading various directions (for breakfast, dinner, etc...), and a great garden. Joke and Tonno have managed to prepare a place with great care and attention. The only thing you should consider is: if you intend to go there for home office work in a quiet surrounding, be aware that the wifi is not always reliable. Also note that you have to walk uphills for a few minutes between the parking area and the entrance of the house (in case you travel with small children or older persons). Joke and Tonno made our stay very pleasant: great description of the area and the place, thank you so much! We very much enjoyed our stay at your place!

The house is gorgeous, fully equipped with anything you may need. Regrettably se had ti interrupt our stay because of the fires that affected the area. The house survived beautifully, though, and we were lucky enough to have Jokke and Tonno as landlords plus Peter and Silvia ad caretakers. They did all they could to assist and provide information during the most alarming moments of this Emergency. The house did not suffer any damage and Jokke and Tonno were so kind as to pay us back the whole amount. I Wish to express my gratitude to them and Hope to enjoy the Ano Tobra house sono.
