Real gem in Torquay

Sophie and Alec welcomed us like friends. The property had a spacious bedroom with smart TV and bathroom with ample showering products. There was lots of choice for breakfast using local quality ingredients. There’s a short walk into the town and harbour making The Shirley an ideal place for exploring Torquay. Both Alec and Sophie made us feel welcome. There’s a lovely outdoor area although in December we didn’t use it. One real plus breakfast was served 08:45 - 09:45 which is a bonus not having to rise too early. Earlier breakfast was available on request

Fantastic break

What a lovely warm welcome. The Shirley was a great find and the room was exactly as we expected. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary during our stay and they decorated our room with balloons and banners. Such a lovely gesture.

The only downside was the hill back from the marina. We know its all hills in Torquay so we just got a taxi back to save on my legs and back.

Fantastic hosts, always available for any queries, excellent breakfast, close to restaurants, pubs and the harbour. Gorgeous old building with lovely original features. All at a great price. Will definitely back again.

Alec and Sophie were very welcoming and friendly. The cooked breakfast was lovely. Location was good only a short walk to the Marina and town.

The access would be a problem for an older person or someone with walking issues, the car park was on an incline and rather steep steps to the property.

I booked the hotel for this couple & they enjoyed their stay in general. The driveway to the hotel car park is a bit steep but that is because of the elevation of the building. Unfortunately one of the guests is allergic to pets and there were a few 'hotel cats' around the place. Apart from that, all good!

The Hosts were most welcoming, made you feel comfortable straight away. The location was very well situated and suited us. The breakfast was really good, with lots of choices. On the whole a great stay.

3 Days and nights at the shirley

The host were excellent very friendly and accommodating. the breakfast was excellent we had the full English 2 days and the omelet on the 3rd day could not fault it.. for relatively new owners they run it very well would recommend it

Fantastic family run hotel

I had a wonderful stay at The Shirley in Torquay, and it’s a place I’d highly recommend! Sophie, the host, was absolutely lovely—friendly, welcoming, and made me feel right at home from the moment I arrived. The cozy living room was a highlight, complete with a huge TV, perfect for a movie night during rainy days. The rooms were spacious, with comfortable beds and decent hot showers, ensuring a relaxing stay. Breakfast was a treat, offering a great selection including pastries, a full English, various egg options, and pancakes—something for everyone! Adding to the charm, the house cats and dachshunds greeted me warmly, adding a delightful personal touch. The outside parking and upper decking were fantastic bonuses, providing extra convenience and a nice spot to enjoy. Overall, a fantastic experience!

An amazing hotel with such lovely owners!

Beautiful hotel with such lovely owners Sophie and Alec. They couldn't do enough for us! Our room was lovely, fresh milk and tea and coffee each day. And the full English breakfast was amazing! Close to the harbour with plenty of eating places for the evenings . We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Shirley and will definitely be back! Thank you Alec and Sophie 🥰

Lovely break and nice and relaxing

Location was good, though there is a steep drive into the property breakfast was lovely did bacon really crispy as requested and good choice to choose from. Was really nice to have fresh milk and water daily.

The owners Sophie and Alex were most welcoming, very approachable, very friendly, they had only been in the accomodation for 8 weeks or so, however they were the perfect hosts and very very pleasant.

The bedroom was very comfortable, but in need of decoration and updating, but that said the hosts are new to the property and are in the process of updating the property.

Beautiful accommodation, fantastic hosts

We were greated by Alec, he explained him and Sophie had taken over the Shirley only 8 weeks ago, which was a suprise, as they ran the b&b as though they had done it for years, everything clean and comfortable. Breakfast was perfect. We're booking again for next year

Great old fashioned B and B experience by the seaside

The owners were amazingly friendly and helpful. The breakfast was fantastic. The location is close to town and the harbour. Onsite parking was available. The building has a quaint charm.

If we ever return to Torquay, we would absolutely want to return to the Shirley - highly recommended.

The building was full of charm and character. It was just a leisurely 10 minute stroll to the harbour and waterfront area. Nick and Chen were superb hosts, helpful and very friendly.

Getting into and out of the car park is a challenge with the access being so steep but it is doable.

Chen and Nick were incredibly friendly and did everything to ensure our stay was wonderful. The location was close to the city centre and other interesting venues like the museum. The building itself was stunning with period features and modern amenities.

We had a very pleasant stay and the owners were very friendly and accommodating.

The room was very pleasant and kept very clean with fresh towels each day. The room had some useful extra's such as tea/coffee and clean glasses with a fridge, so we could have chilled wine in our room if we chose. The breakfasts were excellent and always served on time and with a smile.
