Great location. Garage was a boon! (Just make sure you have a smallish car as it can be a bit tight). Loved the quirkiness of the place, the back yard privacy, convenience of everything. The owners certainly take pride in this place. Veranda great for sitting on a lazy arvo in the warmth. Would stay here again for sure

I really enjoy this cottage....it is clearly loved, and has survived since 1905..through earthquakes etc. It has a wonderful history, is totally private..and is like a quaint country cottage, in the middle of the city. It has all the facilities you might need. Plus an outside bath....fabulous!

We were unaware it was only 2 bedrooms with 2 double beds... but worked just fine because the boys had sleeping bags on one bed. Dishwasher was not functioning safely with drawers unable to take weight so we chose to hand wash our dishes. Apart from that we enjoyed our stay.

We’ve been traveling the South Island for 3 weeks, staying in various Rental homes and hostels, all about equally priced. We are not picky about our lodging. But this house is the only negative experience we had the entire time. It’s obvious the owners are proud of the history of the home and the artifacts on display. But we just want a comfortable place to stay for a few days, not a museum. First, this home does not sleep 5 as advertised. If they claim your pull out sofa is also a double bed, They have never actually opened it and slept on it. Finally got it opened (needs to be vacuumed under couch). I’m 5’6 and my legs were hanging 4 inches off the end. There was a huge bump across the middle. My 6’. 0 son slept on the floor all 3 nights. The house had cobwebs all over the place and several spiders. Ceiling fans had a thick layer of dust. It was very cluttered and felt small and cramped for 5 of us. The bathroom is basically in the kitchen and the bathroom door is see-through glass (why?!) so be sure to tell anyone in the house to look away if you are exiting the shower because you will be seen. We were kept awake with stray cats crying and fighting in the yard. Windows don’t open, to get fresh air you have to leave a door open, but then you have to deal with stray cats. There was a full size high chair taking up a lot of space in the small dining room. There was no clean sponge to wash dishes and no garbage liners. Drawers had household junk that were useless to us. A purely decorative, uncomfortable large church pew took up hall space. This house just was not a comfortable space. Too cluttered with dusty Knick-knacks to make it a comfortable living space. It’s not all negative...the WiFi worked well, there were plenty of towels provided, good water pressure and a washer AND dryer were available and the first dish washer we’ve seen in 3 weeks was in the house. Also it was inexpensive. But this was the only place we would not recommend out of all the equally priced homes we stayed in in our 3 weeks.
