Exceptional. Our best accommodation in Bali

A true hidden gem. We booked at Mathis after a change of plans brought us to Ubud earlier that planned and it's probably the best decision we made about our trip. Firstly, the location is peaceful and easy enough to get to, a short scooter/taxi north of central Ubud town. It's located looking out onto rice fields and is beautifully designed with a decent swimming room and covered dining area. The bungalow we stayed in was immaculately clean, huge and with elegant interior decor. The food at the restaurant was great quality, cocktails reasonably priced and there's a brilliant selection of activities including a BBQ and acoustic music evening, feeding the ducks (who were an absolute charm to just observe in their duck house and pond) and more. We had a massage at the spa which was also good. And there's a yoga studio at the far end of the first rice field. The price was also very reasonable for the quality, but definitely one of the most stand-out factors was the lovely people hosting us. Every member of staff was so genuinely friendly, welcoming and kind. From the beginning, we just felt very well cared for. They recommended a local temple ceremony happening one night and told us what we needed to wear. We were almost the only westerners there observing a beautiful ceremony including music, dance and costumes which felt like the whole town attended. Magical. We will be recommending Mathis to everyone we talk to about our time in Bali and are very happy to recommend it more generally. Thanks to Bintang and all the staff for a truly memorable and beautiful experience.

Beautiful hotel surrounded by rice fields and nature

Before check-in, we received a message saying we’d get a free massage, but on arrival we were told (in tiny print) that it only applied if we stayed at all hotels in their chain. After I pointed out how misleading it was, they offered a 30-minute massage that was never scheduled. At check-in, staff asked if we wanted to go to our room or have the welcome drink. We went to the room first, but when we returned, no one served us, and the drink took a long time. They could have taken our luggage while we enjoyed it, as they offered at check-out. The first room’s AC didn’t work, and the room change took a while. Laundry service was delayed, overpriced, and the room had many ants. The bathroom door came off the rail easily, and hot water ran out quickly — impossible to use the bathtub. We also found a cockroach in the bathroom, and even after reporting it, the basket with it stayed outside all night. Breakfast service was inconsistent and the spa prices were extremely high

Without the rice field view it wouldn’t be worth it, it’s possible to find better hotels for the same price

I really liked the location and it was peaceful outside of the city centre of Ubud. The bed is big and comfort is ok, it’s good to have a balcony looking over the rice fields. Breakfast was good but not big enough if you’ve got a bit appetite in the morning. Staff was welcoming and nice but a bit too much (more on the other section)

I don’t think it’s got the standard of a 4 stars hotel: - bathroom was kind of awful : very bad smell, stains on the wall, you could feel it was not clean and what about the bath you can’t shower in ? - I was straight up being harassed about leaving a review : they asked me every day several time a day, they tried offering a free massage, I received at least 5 emails and 5 WhatsApp texts, it was really really annoying, they went to find me when I was relaxing near the pool to ask me to leave a review - swimming pool in a bad state as well, kind of damp, water didn’t feel very clean and very much chlorinated - a lot of noise (most of it from the cleaning staff in the morning banging doors, a bit from the neighbours, walls are very thin). I didn’t appreciate being woken up in the morning when I was very much jet lagged - staff a bit noisy asking me where I was going, I could feel they’re not used to solo travellers and they were intrigued by it somehow

Sadly, in the room many insects during our stay. (I know Ubud is located in the middle of the jungle) but…. The food was ok. Nothing special. But for the price payed I expect better.

Charming and relaxing stay overlooking the rice fields

The staff at the property was very responsive and very helpful. The property is well maintained and very charming with lovely view over the rice fields. It is located a bit outside the center which is perfect if you are looking to stay in a more quieter environments and there are still plenty of restaurants and cafe near by.

Our first room looked tired and was next to the road , so we moved to room 15 which was on the opposite site of grounds and was very lovely . The coffee served in the restaurant isn’t the best quality for the price paid it could be improved please . We stayed for 7 nights and found the breakfast menu quite limited please add a couple more options , like simple pastry’s and toast and jams . Please extend the ducks cage as there are 7 pet ducks in a tiny enclosure this could be extended into the garden to give the ducks more room it was very sad to see.

Peaceful and beautiful small resort overlooking the rice fields.

My husband and I had 3 fabulous nights in this lovely retreat overlooking the rice fields. we thought it was paradise. The staff were so friendly and warm. Service was excellent and the location so peaceful and serene. The breakfasts were excellent and so was dinner. We ate there for 2 nights, and we also appreciated the afternoon tea provided every day. We would highly recommend this accommodation and will definitely book another stay the next time we travel to Bali. We liked how it was out of the busy part of central Ubud but a taxi or shuttle bus took us in there when we needed to visit.

Peaceful surroundings, nice Team!

I had a truly wonderful stay at this beautiful hotel. Everything was perfect – the surroundings were peaceful and absolutely stunning. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, and everything went smoothly from check-in to check-out. Breakfast was delicious and freshly prepared each morning. My room was modern, spotless, and very comfortable. As a solo traveler, I felt completely relaxed, safe, and well taken care of. Highly recommended!

Beautiful Bali

Gorgeous hotel surrounded by beautiful rice paddies. Lovely pool area and delicious food. We were upgraded our first night and it was a beautiful suite. Even the standard rooms were really nice and spacious with outdoor patios to sit, sip a drink and watch the sun go down. Very friendly and attentive staff.

Nice ricefields but the villa/room is a bit overrated

The rice fields and the restaurant facing them are exceptional. We enjoyed the a la cart breakfast. The staff was kind, welcoming and receptive to our requests.

The pool could do with a bit more cleaning: the water had a white/grey hue (I'm not sure if it was from the chlorine) and there were organic remains in the water. The villas share a wall that offers no noise insulation: we could hear the next door guests plug stuff into their socket, conversation, TV, etc. The bathroom is separated from the bedroom by a courtain which doesn't cover the whole entryway: little to no privacy when taking a shower. No hand shower head which is a big negative for families with kids.

Beautiful place

This place is absolutely beautiful. The yoga classes were excellent, and the photoshoot was such a lovely experience. There’s a deep sense of peace here—I spent Nyepi at the property and it was the perfect setting for it. The staff is incredibly kind and welcoming. My room was stunning, with a beautiful bathtub. The restaurant offers a wide variety of options, and everything I tried was delicious. I truly recommend this place!

Lovely retreat and friendly staff

Staff were incredible. Very friendly and accommodating. Great location, away from the crowds and yet sill very close to Ubud centre. They allowed early check-in and late checkout and when one of our guests was sick, they helped to take care of her and gave a complimentary meal. Highly would recommend this retreat. The massages here were great also!

Very good

The property was incredible! Exactly as it says! A retreat in Ubud that is close enough to see the amazing sights that Ubud has to offer but also slightly out which gives you the more rural setting, providing you with peace and tranquility! We are travelling with. Two year old and needed a place to stay which would be easy and chilled! Look no further if you are travelling with kids! The property has an on-site restaurant that provides the most delicious food at a cost but well worth it! It’s easy to go for dinner and then step back in your air conditioned room. We also ventured out to the restaurants on our doorstep that were priced amazingly and excellent quality. The staff at the resort were next level, so friendly and accommodating! This was a little piece of heaven in crazy bustling Ubud! 💜

Ok but not the level i expected for the price i paid

The pool and staff were great

The bathrooms were terrible, paint falling iff the walls, rising damp and mould on the soap dispenser. For the price u pay at a miniumim you expect clean and crisp. Feels like a old house renovated on the cheap. For a day visit to the pool a d view with the great staff is good but i wouldnt stay there again for that price. Better options out there

Relocation from one accommodation to another after confirmation of booking. Communication from the reception to guests could have been better between the booking and the arrival at the property. When we were at Shamkya villa (no 6), I noticed a vertical drop about 2 metres just next to the main entrance of our villa. There were no safety rails to prevent any accidental fall.

Lovely play to stay. Rice terrace is just fabulous. Very calm around, nice pool, great restaurant. Rooms are okey, quite stylish. Nice view through the balcony. You can walk till Ubud city centre, don’t even need a taxi.

There were mosquitoes sometimes near the pool. So don’t know if the hotel using something against them. Price a lil bit too high for those standarts.

Piece of paradise in stunning part of Bali

The area is amazing. Rice fields and birds as far as the eye can see. There were beautiful tropical gardens and ducks in the pond. The restaurant was great and staff were lovely. The rooms were a little basic but nice - the tub in the bathroom was stunnng. Best of all, the pool overlooking the rice fields was a absolutely gorgeous and very relaxing.

The internet was poor and there was NO tv facilities. The retreat advertised full access to foxtel etc but there were no channels at all.
