location was very central, close to the old harbor and restaurants. the room was small, clean inviting us to eat outside the noise was almost zero

Exploring Rheythmo for the first time was magical.

The location is fabulous in old town, close to everything but on a quiet street. The room is lovely with stone walls and ambiance of Greek architecture. The roof top has an amazing view. Host Iro shares her family home which makes it even more special.although there is free parking around town we chose to pay for parking right nearby and found it affordable. It was about 13-15e for 24 hours and for the convenience we felt it was worth it.

Charming old stone room in a fantastic location, great city, very comfy stay in every way

Excellent location, charming place, nice big bathroom and good shower, good AC, comfy bed, and all of that in a place with a pretty little courtyard and cool stone walls. Really felt a lot of charm. Great spot to wander into the restaurants and maze-like streets of Rethymnos, which are utterly charming. Our favorite stay (both city and hotel) in all of Crete. Loved it and would definitely stay here again.

Because it's old stone walls, there's a bit of an old, musty smell at first before the AC kicks in (and even after, frankly). Didn't bother us at all -- was part of the charm. But it's not like a modern, sterile spot if that's important to you.

Warm cosy comforting home away from home

Beautiful old building with internal gardens and very tastefully decorated rooms . Super comfortable bed and excellent Airconditioner for those hot days. Iro is very good with communication and a delightful woman, who wants to ensure your time in Rethymno is the best it can be . She has many helpful suggestions

The perfect couples retreat in Rethymno.

My partner and I stayed a week at Barbara studios and we couldn't have made a better choice. The accommodation itself is beautiful, with a courtyard and private garden - there's many beautiful touches and design choices around the communal areas which add to the character. The location is perfect, nestled between Old Town, Fortress and the Old Port with just a short 10 minute walk to the beach, it's in the mix of everything while being nestled away on a quieter street. The standout however is the host Iro, she has gone above and beyond in supporting out trip with recommendations, arranging transfers, amazing communication and absolutely lovely if you get to meet in person! I left a very sentimental piece of Jewellery in the accommodation and Iro has gone above and beyond to keep it safe and help arrange return back to the UK showing immense honesty, integrity and kindness. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in Crete, we will certainly be back.

Barbara Studios – A Living Piece of Venetian-Cretan Heritage with a Family Soul

Barbara Studios is more than a place to stay — it’s a beautifully preserved part of Rethymno’s story. Nestled within the Old Town near the historic Porta Guora, this residence sits among cobbled alleys and timeless stone façades shaped by centuries of Venetian and Ottoman influence. The building itself is a lovingly maintained 17th-century Venetian home, where the heart of the house is an inward-facing courtyard — a hallmark of Renaissance-era architecture. These courtyards once brought light and calm to urban life, and they still do today. At Barbara Studios, the tranquil garden becomes a place for quiet breakfasts, slow mornings, and peaceful reflection. Spread across two to three levels, the studios are decorated with warmth and attention to detail. On the top floor, you'll find a space to hang your laundry, a café-style corner, and a serene rooftop area to relax under the Cretan sun. What truly makes this place special, though, is the family behind it. Barbara Studios has been owned and run by the same Cretan family since 1969, now in its fourth generation. Today, Panos and Iro continue the tradition of heartfelt Greek hospitality — greeting guests not as customers, but as welcomed visitors into their home. Their warmth, attentiveness, and quiet pride in the history of the house infuse every corner with soul. Barbara Studios is not just a studio — it’s a story. Of stone and silence, of history and care, of old roots and living traditions. A place where the past and the present come together beautifully.

Super accommodation in a super location.

The owner of the guesthouse is super friendly and helpful, the house is located in the heart of the old town, few meters away from the sea, surrounded by cafés and restaurants. The rooms are very clean, comfortable and air-conditioned.

Lovely stay!

All was perfect! Central location, the large room, nicely furnished and with a lovely balcony. Communication was great making very easy to reach the Studio and a lot of advices to enjoy Retimno at his best.

Lovely, traditional home in the center of Rethymno

The location is excellent--in the old town but on a quiet side street. The place itself is charming and built in a traditional style. The room was comfortable and attractive, particularly the bed, and the bathroom was very nice, with a roomy shower. Iro is a very kind and attentive hostess who is eager to help you with anything you might need.

It was not possible to use the toaster or the kettle in the kitchen area because there was no electric socket there, so you had to move these appliances to different locations in the room. Also, if you like to get a lot of natural light, ask for a room on the upper floor; the rooms on the lower floor are quite dark. There is no balcony or place to dry your clothes if you wash them.

The accommodation lies at the heart of the old city of Rethymnon. Although it is an old manor, it has super modern facilities. Our room was sparkling clean, with a fully equipped kitchenette and beautifully decorated. But most of all, we want to mention our hostess, Iro, who was more than kind, friendly and helpful. This accommodation will be our first choice when we visit Rethymnon again. Thank you very much, Iro!

We had a wonderful stay at Barbara Studios! The location is very central but also very quiet. It is a charming old family house converted into small studios. You can find everything you need in the room and if you need anything Iro is very kind and helpful. We felt at home during our stay and look forward to staying there again :)

Perfect localisation in a friendly atmosphere.

Great, energetic and supportive host! Owner even has her own handmade map with recommendations! We were also able to check-in earlier. Great localisation - in the middle of old city center; lot of restaurants, pubs and a shop nearby. Room was nice (even with a welcome rakija drink!), there is a nice roof terrace to have a rest in the evening. Working A/C and comfy bed.

Room is in an very old house - it is not a disadvantage, but you should remember that. Our room had only a window coming to the patio, which is a common area (it was also not a problem). There was a strange smell in bathroom, not unpleasant though - you just get used too.

Then owner Iro was sooo friendly and explained us the whole city and things to do. We loved her cute doggie who is already 14 years old and still climbs the stairs like a champ. We loved our stay here. They also washed our clothes for a reasonable price. We rented EBikes and had such an amazing day at the Arcadi Monastery and an Olive Oil museum, Margarites village with its amazing pottery and so many great rides up and down. The room was great, bed comfortable and had a fridge and coffee machine as well. The rooftop view and location next to the Venezian fortress where they also have concerts in summer and you can listen to it from Barbara Studios rooftop. There is a restaurant just opposite which we liked. It was a bit more on the expensive side but great kitchen. We would love to stay here again. Thanks Iro for a wonderful stay and we wish your cute doggie a result on the blood test Alissa and Chris

I stayed at Barbara Studios with my partner for 2 weeks and absolutely loved it there. Location is fabulous, right in the old town, close to the port and beaches. The flat was cleaned every other day which was pleasantly unexpected. The kitchen had everything required but the hob was basic. Ok if you don't want to cook often or cook only for 1 or 2 people. Iro and the staff were very friendly. The building has a roof-top terrace, a garden in the backyard and another terrace. Great to just chill, read or play board games. All in all, I highly recommend the place and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again :) :)

Iro was fantastic, she explained us how to do the self check-in because we arrived in Rethymno during the evening, and told us a lot of things about the city in a very kind and detailed way. The apartment was perfect, very big and clean. We only can thank them for the kindness and the hospitality.
