I wanted a place that invited me to participate in Japan rather than consume it. I find that I can only get that at a Ryokan and provided everything I was looking for

Staying at Murataya was like staying with family. We were welcomed by Yuichi, his mother and father straight away into their beautiful traditional ryokan. They even had the original phone switchboard in reception to place outside calls. The room with a garden view was so lovely and we wore their yakata robes round the house throughout our five night stay. The location - right by the Tatemachi vintage street, Kenrokuen gardens and castle was excellent. We have experienced shared bathrooms and toilets on trips before and had no problem with this at Murataya. The Ryokan is scrupulously clean and you can lock the door in either bathrooms for a private experience in the lovely deep warm bath. Whilst you have to be considerate of other guests there were only a small number staying so pressure on bathrooms was not an issue. We had the lovingly prepared Japanese breakfast one morning as well. Thank you to the family. We will be back.

We had a wonderful stay at this ryokan in Kanazawa. Our room was spacious, spotless, and very peaceful. Even though the bathrooms are shared, they were always clean and available — even during a busy festival weekend. Most of the time it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.
The staff were truly exceptional. I unfortunately became ill with food poisoning, and they went above and beyond to help us. On a Sunday, when clinics were closed, they arranged an appointment at the hospital and even drove us there. Their kindness and care made a huge difference during a stressful moment.
They also helped us before we even arrived — arranging a restaurant reservation for my partner’s birthday and securing tickets for tea ceremonies during the festival. Their support made our trip so much smoother and more special.
We can’t thank them enough. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a warm, authentic, and welcoming stay in Kanazawa.
No complaints at all — we loved every part of our stay.

Very traditional Japanese style hotel.
They don’t have slope and stairs. Only public bathroom and shower rooms.
