I have travelled to 47 countries and this place is arguably the most peaceful paradise I have stayed in. The traditional house itself, the decor, the setting, the manicured garden, the natural organic pool, the rice fields, the sea view, the rumbling of crashing waves, the sunset, the housekeepers making the breakfast...all paradise boxes are ticked. The official photos ring the truth. Spencer the owner build this house with mind boggling love for detail, taste and design. He is also a great guy, who lives next door but totally respects your privacy if you want to. He has a wealth of local knowledge and is basically on call in case there is any questions or trouble.
Please note: Paradise is a quiet and remote by definition. There is very few walkable food options. Ideally you bring your own wheels when you are staying there or rent a scooters ( do not start learning how to ride a scooter on Bali! ). The beach is is equally VERY quiet and there is kilometres of it! You need to be comfortable in the sea. Nobody will come and save you.
We did the 3min walk to the beach for a few sunsets and you can count people within sight on one hand.
The 3 ladies preparing breakfast/housekeeping are happy to run errands for groceries, drinks or meals for you, which was brilliant as we had no car.
You can walk into Balian Beach in 40min along the beach where you can meet your surfing digital nomads and get your local or western food. But there is absolutely no hordes anywhere in Balian. This is backwater Bali.
Spencer connected us with a trusted driver who was very happy to do little trips around town and shops - as well as day trip to a wonderful and hidden waterfall after a 20min hike.

Beautiful place, friendly host.
The meals prepared for us were delicious and they were able to cope very well with one of our party being coeliac and needing everything to be gluten free.
We didn't realise quite how remote the place was but it was in a beautiful setting.
There was nowhere to get lunch/dinner within walking distance but Spencer arranged for the cook to prepare meals for us.
An option at time of booking to be half or full board would have been a great idea.

We loved our stay at Pondok Matekap. The villa is spacious, beautifully designed and completely private, with the sound of the sea in the background and wonderful sunsets from the terrace. There’s also a natural eco-pool for swimming, which we loved. The pristine beach is just a short walk through the rice fields.
Spencer and his family were very welcoming and even helped us organise a lovely trip to a waterfall and lunch overlooking rice fields.
Meals served on the terrace were fresh, tasty and beautifully prepared. The staff were friendly, kind and attentive, making everything feel relaxed and effortless.
A perfect place to unwind and enjoy real Bali. Highly recommended!

Our stay at the villa was truly amazing. The place is beautifully decorated in Balinese style, surrounded by lush nature, and has a peaceful, eco-friendly atmosphere. The walk to the beach through stunning rice fields was unforgettable, and the sunsets were absolutely breathtaking.
Spencer, the owner, was fantastic – always friendly, professional, and ready to help with anything we needed. He even organized extra things for us, making our stay even more special. Everything felt natural and in harmony with the surroundings, from the fresh air to the eco-friendly details. The breakfasts were fresh, healthy, and delicious – the perfect start to each day.
It’s the perfect place to relax, enjoy nature, and feel completely taken care of. We would definitely love to return one day.
