The location and the view are truly stunning and unique. Unfortunately, that was about the only aspect that lived up to expectations - and those expectations were not high to begin with.
We really wanted to love our stay at Rock n Reef, but unfortunately, it fell short in several important areas.
The road down to the hotel is about what you would expect for this type of location - steep and challenging. We only traveled with backpacks, which made it manageable for us, but we genuinely felt sorry for guests who had to carry large suitcases up and down. While the hotel does offer assistance, the first thing they encourage upon arrival is that it you give 50,000 IDR (3$). Given the hotel’s remote location and relatively high price point, this service should absolutely be included.
The Wi-Fi was extremely slow and unreliable, constantly cutting in and out. For a property charging these rates, stable internet should be a basic amenity.
The hotel overall feels more like a hostel than a hotel. The “reception” is located in the common area where guests sunbathe and swim. It also doubles as a staff lounge and kitchen - everything combined into one shared space. While the location itself is beautiful, the standard of the facilities is very basic. That wouldn’t necessarily be a problem on its own, but when the property also feels outdated and unclean, it simply doesn’t meet expectations.
Cleanliness in the room was not up to standard. There were yellow stains on the bed, marks and dirt on the walls, and the glasses in the room had a strange smell. These details made the stay feel uncomfortable.
The staff were perfectly okay - neither particularly friendly nor unfriendly - but nothing stood out in terms of service.
Overall, we unfortunately cannot say that Rock n Reef is worth the price. We paid around $140 per night in February. For comparison, we paid $120 per night for a five-star luxury hotel with impeccable standards and service in Ubud. The price here is far too high for what you actually receive.
We truly wanted to like this place, but in the end, it was difficult. Sadly, we will not be returning.

Nothing apart from the ocean view from the room balcony.
The hotel was extremely inconvenient to access, with around 100 steep steps leading down to the property that were muddy and unsafe to walk on. The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful, only carrying some of our luggage despite the difficult access. The reception, kitchen, and laundry were all located in the same room, which felt unprofessional and poorly organised. The rooms were poorly maintained and not clean, making the overall stay very disappointing.

The location! Stunning views, so close to the sea and lovely rooms
The hike down to it, lots of steep steps, a bit dangerous with wet leaves on the steps and mud.
I absolutely loved the close proximity to the sea but the waves are also very loud so sleeping was tricky, take ear plugs!

The driver helped us check in and luggage at night
Do not book! we left on the same night.
I paid Rp 8,466,000 for two nights!
No refund or compensation at the end.
Waited 4 days for a disappointing outcome.
We arrived at 11pm local time there were no one to check us in (after hours). The driver helped us to carry 1 out of the 3 luggage down to the room. It was vaguely described on booking.com that there is a "90 step" path down the cliff. Please note that 90 step is steep on the side of the cliff, sometimes no barrier or safety rails. Going up and down without load or luggage is already challenging, I 28 y/o male and the driver had to take 3 separate breaks, drenched in sweat to carry our luggage to and back. (Other reviews suggest you will needs to pay staff to carry your luggage during the day).
When we got to the room immediately we smell a heavy mould smell in the room. I've lived in many damp or humid rooms in Bali but the mould smell in this room is overwhelming.
We turned the Aircon on but didn't cool the room in the 3 hours we were there.
I'll let the photos do the talking.
Bathroom extremely unhygienic room mouldy looks like being painted over old mould (same experience from other reviews).
My wife and I felt this will be a health risk sleeping over night and no staff was around to assist us at that time. We decided to leave and book another accomodations in the middle of the night. We messaged the property via booking.com and left.
Over the next 4 days we messaged Canelle from the property and asked for a refund or compensation for the experience. Owner have to make the call but was overseas and can't respond for 4 days.
Message attached. They acknowledge their mistake but no refund or compensation. The reason they provide is that all issues are fixable, but they don't acknowledge there was no one to fix those issues at the time of my stay. Like they expect me to stay in a mouldy room use the disgusting bathroom and wait for them the next Morning. Booking.

Beautiful views, close to the ocean, clean and friendly staff.
The stairs to and from the property, but it’s definitely worth it.

Loved the location, the endless views were stunning
Nothing we didn’t like. The steps are steep but that’s all part of the location

The location was breathtaking. Our room was carved into the rock face, with uninterrupted views. The setting was easily the most memorable part of our stay one of the best locations I’ve ever experienced. Down a couple of steps and we were on the beach and able to have a swim.
We loved falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing on the rocks below and feeling the gentle vibrations of the sea echo through the room, it made for the most peaceful sleep.
This location won’t be for everyone. The stairs down to the accommodation are very steep. But if you’re up for it, I’d highly recommend it, the experience is what this resort is all about.
The only downside for us was that it was the middle of summer and the air-conditioning unit in the room was too small to properly cool the space. The staff were lovely though and brought us a fan, which kept the air moving and made it much more comfortable.
This is still a 10 out of 10 experience for us!

The view and room are great. The ocean is right there and the staff were lovely. Yes the stairs down are a decent workout but that’s what gets you right near the water. Very relaxing

Location close to the water and secluded from the busy areas of Uluwatu but close enough

The location was exceptional!
We stayed at this accommodation about a year ago and loved it so much that we decided to return. Unfortunately, this visit didn’t live up to our previous experience, mainly due to interactions with staff that felt unwelcoming and at times rude.
After our stay at Rock n Reef, we visited other villas in Uluwatu and were met with much warmer, more polite service, which highlighted the contrast. We hope this is something that can be improved in the future, as the property itself has great potential and we truly enjoyed it on our first visit.

The location is to die for! Literally you have your own private beach area and can’t for walks at low tide.
It’s for a little restaurant, bar and seated area with the best views. It’s perfect for a few days.
Even though there are a lot of stairs, the staff help with the bags.

Location and view from rooms
Inconveniences to get to the rooms. You have to walk up and down roughly 90 massive steps to see the city. They are no proper lights on the streets, it can become very dark at night. I had a massive crab in the toilet as it has open panels for ventilation.
Room la do not have basic amenities like hot kettle, iron, moisturiser or even fan. Room has small air condition, which isn’t enough to cool the room.

Stunning location and absolutely beautiful rooms, comfy bed, private terrace and gorgeous communal areas caved into the landscape. Lovely walk to penang penang beach at low tide

Spectacular view. Serene and close to nature. With monkeys on your rooftop and gecos all over the place, including under your shower😄 rooms cleaned daily and enough sun lounges for all guests to find a spot. Tasty and freshly prepared breakfast and excellent fruit bowls.
Staff’s attitude was not very Balinese. Carrying luggage to and from the hotel is required as there are hundreds of steep steps to conquer. I have nothing against tipping culture but stating that carrying a luggage must be paid at least 50k per piece is a bit of a push. Hotel in such location should be prepared that if guests need assistance to even make it there at all - they should have staff available and happy to help. Young gentleman carried my luggage up the stairs, dropped it right at the end of the road out of the forest. Was not happy to assist me with another 500metres to the point where all taxis could arrive and asked for money. It would be more appropriate if the hotel pays an employee for the job and tips remain tips.

It is a bit of a mission to leave (and who would want to) so perhaps a bit more variety or “specials” at the restaurant?

Location was absolutely beautiful. The cleanliness of where the food was made wasn’t appealing so chose not to eat there.

Love the location, the views are breathtaking staff are super lovely and just let you be, dinner at the rock and reef was next level and super cheap!
Property is a little dated for the price, air con struggles because of positioning in room.

Beautiful location, neat and tidy room and good food/breakfast.
The steps are tough with bags or in the heat but you are warned beforehand. The power went out one morning so we didn’t have electricity or running water in our room, but that couldn’t be helped.

The location is breathtaking. The 100 stairs down aren’t for the faint hearted, but if you’re up for the challenge, it’s so worth it. Sleeping by the ocean and waking up to the most beautiful view was unbeatable.
We loved this place, but be aware that its unique location on the cliffs meant the aircon was a bit weak and the good old Bali drain in the shower got a bit whiffy at times. But that’s a small price to pay.

The amazing location. Stayed on the sunset room and it was beautiful, spacious, with a balcony sea view. Comfortable bed. Staff very kind and welcoming. They helped with the luggage coming up and down 90 stairs. We just sent an whatsapp message and they were immediately available. Recommend tip is 50k per person carrying a bag.
It has different cozy spots where you can have your meals, that are lovely. The view, the sunset, the water on the beach, everything was amazing.
Good meals and even grilled fish, ordered 3 hours in advance. And the best fried banana I’ve ever had!

The view is so beautiful, and being able to swim in the ocean whenever you want is so nice. The staff are lovely and very helpful. It would be literally so perfect if they upgraded the air cons and toilets.
If you are going to stay here, and you should its lovely, you just need to be aware that you will be in for not so great pillows and hot sleeps, the air con in our room did not work the best. Be prepared for bugs and geckos, nothing crazy but just what comes with a very naturesque place like this one.

The view of the ocean is breathtaking and we loved the individual bungalows. Breakfast was included. The staff were lovely and helped carry our luggage up and down the steep steps.
Our toilet/bathroom smelt bad and being divided from the room only by an open rock wall, it made the whole bungalow smell. Not sure about other bungalows. We stayed here to escape the busy parts of Bali but there must be a club close by because you could hear the music till late. I wouldn’t stay too long as the walk out is hard.

This property was so picturesque! Even better than the photos!
We stayed in the Blufinity room and loved it. We enjoyed waking up to the waves and watching the surfers and sunset drinks on the balcony. The facilities are beautiful and we loved our breakfast every morning with the most beautiful views.
The staff were all so lovely and welcoming!
We would recommend staying here to anyone and will definitely stay again when we come back to Bali.

The accommodation is in a stunning location with a beautiful sea view. However, guests should be aware that the stairs leading to the property are very steep, so it’s not recommended for elderly people or anyone with mobility issues. The beach next to the hotel is accessible during low tide, but not really usable during high tide. The staff were very friendly at first, but the friendliness faded the longer we stayed.

It has a good view but there are better places around here. If you’ve stayed at good places you wouldn’t like it here.
You’ve to wait 10-15 minutes outside Antara once youve called them to collect your luggage. Its an old property. Rooms had smell, no air fresheners in room for it. The hotel manager never responds to your messages. Average food options. Room had no basic amenities at all. No mineral water available at restaurant. They only provide filtered water. You have to go to reception to ask for things, no telephone.

The bbq dinner. Could taste the kerosene that the fire was started with.

Amazing location, it’s like a literal dream waking up here and watching the sun go down. The staff are incredible and fast. The breakfast is yum! The staff carry your bags and up and down. Loved surfing out the front then having. An outdoor shower.
Only thing is was that our shower had little to no hot water or much pressure.

This location is jaw dropping beautiful! Located on a cliff overlooking the sea. Waking up to the sound of the waves and watching the surfers was a highlight! The food was prepared by a small friendly staff. Delicious. A real small business feel. The room was glorious with windows floor to ceiling and typical Balinese decor. Highly recommend for those willing and able to climb many stairs to and from the hotel. Worth the efforts of getting there!
9.0 / 10.0
If you like waking up to crushing waves and beautiful sea view at affordable price. This is it. It also provides free standup and kayak if you are keen for an challenging adventure
To get to the hotel with lugages and without staff help is quite impossible. A generous tip of 50k is reccomended. It's relatively small place for you to relax but not much facjlties available except inhouse massage.
