The Hotel Shoho is an exceptional onsen ryokan. The staff go out of their way to be helpful, using translation apps to facilitate communication in English or other languages. The views across Matsumoto and the Japanese Alps are breathtaking from the main lobby and from the individual rooms. The afternoon drinks reception was a nice touch, and the kaiseki dinner was memorable. We were able to arrange massages at the last minute, and the therapist was excellent. Our room included an open-air private onsen bath, so we didn't try the private baths. The hotel is located a little ways outside of Matsumoto, so it felt like an oasis of calm.

The room was spacious, super clean, and an amazing view. The in room Onsen was fantastic.
The breakfast ended at 9:30, with last order at 9:00. This too early, especially when there are no other food options in the immediate area.

Nestled away from the hustle and bustle and offering tree’s walks and panoramic views of the Japanese Alps
There was nothing I didn’t like. It was older and seemingly past it’s prime which was charming.
