My expectations of Melbourne Lodge weren't high, as I was just trying to book one night in Queenstown without breaking the bank. The location is very pretty, and nicer than I expected. The person on reception was friendly, and obviously cared about his guests experiences. The room was small, but we were charmed by the little terrace outside with a place to sit. Also, we appreciated that the bathroom, though small, had a cheerful shower curtain and new tiles on the floor. There was a cool cushion on each bed which added a touch of luxe, and decent curtains on the sliding doors to keep out the light and the cold. The heat pump worked. There was a kettle for hot drinks and hot water bottles, and I also appreciated the fridge. Most of all, I appreciated the guest lounge. It meant that there was a place to sit, outside of the room. It has a beautiful view of the surroundings, and was peaceful. We didn't use the kitchen facilities but it's great that there is the possibility to heat up food. We also really appreciated the ample parking. The property was clear that the parking was on a first-come, first-served basis, and so we were concerned about leaving with the car once we had a spot. However, we did take the car out to a function in the evening and were pleased to find spaces when we got back.

The hallway to our room smelled of cigarette smoke. It was being aired out, though. We had to go outside on the way to the room which meant we got wet on the way, but that's not a big deal. A teaspoon would have been appreciated for the tea setup, and to really make it, some nice-sized tea cups rather than the tiny standard hotel room ones.

good location, staff were very friendly and helpful. They helped us store luggage for the final day, which was very appreciated.

fairly dated interior. damp room with a heat pump that hardly put out any warmth. only one bottle of hand/body wash for shower and hand basin.
