Very attractive character building on the outside, great location, greeted on arrival and bags carried up to our room - no. 6, top of the stairs 2nd floor so appreciated. Host explained room we had booked on the first floor wasn't available but would move us down to it the following day if we decided to - we chose not to as I found the stairs manageable and only staying two nights. Room, en-suite clean, nice linen. Warm. Nice view. Bed comfortable but pillows a bit flat. Enjoyed the black pudding and the salmon with scrambled eggs for breakfasts (but missed the baked beans, English breakfast good quality ingredients but a bit dry without)

I really don't like giving negatives and slept on this review for some weeks - but after the wonderful reviews we were expecting something special. Maybe we were just unlucky. I would describe room 6 as "extremely" cosy for two people. Had to move a very large stool at the bottom of the bed to unpack and manoeuvre the room safely as I was sleeping at the window side and the en-suite was round the opposite side of the bed. No switch for the wall light at this side which meant I had to use my phone as a torch for midnight trips to the bathroom. There was a flimsy chest of drawers - drawers with no stoppers, just slid out and fell on the floor. TV was right up into the eaves and a large light fitting was detracting from a clear view of it. Door handle to en-suite was stiff and thin so dug in the palm when opening. Plug didn't work, had to wash in running water - realised on day 2 that the hot/cold marker on the tap was the wrong way round! Breakfast felt subdued, the dining room with the dark decor & piped piano music had the feel of a funeral parlour! (Hubby's observation but it made me laugh). It felt rushed, toast arrived with the cereal and the cooked breakfast arrived before we'd finished the first course. The hostess appeared under pressure to serve everyone. Disconcerting. Took a shower 2nd day afternoon - then I wished we had moved rooms, found shower head too high for me to reach, too stiff for hubby to move so had to wash hair too which I was trying to avoid as we were time constrained for an afternoon tea - & the shower floor became very slippy - needs a mat. Clearly hosts were very busy with - we guessed a full occupancy - but maybe if they tried a night in this room they would realise it definitely needs a rejig to make it more comfortable & feel less cramped and cluttered as it must let the rest of the place down.
