We were really looking forward to this stay as a family, and in many ways the hotel itself was lovely — which makes it even more disappointing that one experience ended up overshadowing it.
We received a warm welcome on arrival from a lovely receptionist who made a real effort with our children, which gave us a great first impression. Our room was clean and well prepared with the cot ready, although the shower tray was quite worn and we later discovered the smaller TV was cracked and not working.)
The rest of the room was well decorated, clean, lots of space and comfy.
Breakfast was good, we asked to sit elsewhere as the guests that had been horrible to us the night before were eating breakfast, and we were kindly seated in another area with a lovely view.
Sadly, our evening meal ended up overshadowing the stay due to the behaviour of another group of guests.
We had intentionally booked an early 5:30pm dinner as we were travelling with our young children (aged 3 and 23 months) and wanted to be considerate of other diners. They sat happily for over an hour, ate their meals well, and behaved exactly as you would reasonably expect children their age to behave in a restaurant.
While waiting for dessert, they briefly stood beside our table laughing together. They were not running around or approaching other tables, yet a nearby group began making negative comments about us bringing children, repeatedly glaring and speaking in hostile tones about our parenting. It was uncomfortable and upsetting, particularly as our children had not been disruptive. Staff even offered to move that table, which made it clear the issue was not our family.
Although the other guests eventually moved, the atmosphere had already been affected. In contrast, another nearby table smiled, interacted warmly with our children, and played with them as we were leaving, which reassured us that our children had not been a problem and highlighted how unnecessarily unkind the earlier behaviour had been.
When my partner later explained how upset their behaviour had made me, the guests responded by criticising our parenting and snapping their fingers at staff to have him removed — behaviour that felt unnecessarily rude and quite shocking.
We completely understand that some diners may prefer not to sit near children, and moving tables was absolutely reasonable. However, courtesy and respect should go both ways. Our children quietened immediately when asked, and we had simply hoped to enjoy a relaxed family meal like any other guests. Instead, I ended the evening in tears over something that felt entirely avoidable.

The room was clean and comfortable, the bed ensured a great night’s sleep, and breakfast was well organised and good quality. Excellent value for money overall, and the staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout.
The guest in the room next to us was quite loud late evening.

The food was great, the staff were very friendly and the location was good.
The bathroom smelt of drains, we had to run the cold water tap for a considerable time to get cold water, the bathroom was out dated and the toilet took 10 minutes to refill. The plumbing was so loud that when out neighbour flushed the toilet in the night I thought someone had used our bathroom.

The location was brilliant for us who was going to a near by wedding.
The floors were very creaky, at times it sounds like people were going to come through the room due to the noise it makes

Clean & spacious, could have done with a bit more storage but overall the room was lovely. Breakfast was good but the sausage were cheap rusk laden type. Good bacon n fresh eggs. Beans n fried bread. All good. Staff were very helpful and couldn’t do enough. Valentine’s diner was fabulous, fair play to the chef as he had a separate function on also . Overall very happy and would defo recommend and return again ,.

Good location, just outside the main town centre and the complex was very nice, clean and welcoming. Clubhouse next door had a good range of food and drinks available. Room was clean, spacious and comfortable.
The reception staff were pleasant enough but not overly welcoming. They neglected to inform us that the WiFi had been down for the last few days and while there was a radiator in the room, it wasn't on at all although the radiators were on in the communal areas and hallways. That wouldn't necessarily be an issue, but this was February and it was very cold! There had been heavy rain and snow too, so after a day out exploring Puzzlewood and Clearwell Caves in near-freezing temperatures, we were cold and hoping to warm up in the room. Had a nice hot bath, but it would have been nice if the heating was on in the room! This is something I would expect (along with WiFi) when I'm paying £188 for a 2-night stay.

Most things were okay, I loved having a bath as requested after a 300 mile drive. It was the decider for booking the Bells above Forest lodge.
Stay was fine except the room was cold and radiator didn't come on the whole stay - (The Thermostatic valve is stuck, the water in the pipe is hot but it doesn't make it to the Rad, Needs a new Valve - quite uncomfortable 13 degrees centigrade according to my phone.

Location. Good parking. Nice restaurant.
The Gents Toilet was out of commission in Main Building, so had to go across car park to go to hotel to use the toilet.

The golf course offered a vast open space and friendly staff who were very helpful upon our arrival. The other guests were also very polite.
I pre-requested a double bedroom not a twin, understanding it might not always be guaranteed . However, we received a double bed but with two single beds pushed together. A plug socket was situated behind where my head rested. There was also a crack in the bath panel and the shower soap dispenser was empty.

Walking distance from Coleford. Ample parking, and a comfortable room.
Our room was a "suite" - it was spacious, with a sofa and fridge. Furniture and furnishings were decent and functional

Position of tv in the room. Ran out of salmon at breakfast.

Breakfast was excellent, staff were friendly, location great for attending weddings in Clearwell castle.
Very thin walls and very squeaky floors meant we were woken by anyone who walked past our room, and being in one of the first rooms in the corridor meant this happened alot. Corridors have a strong smell of damp. I'm only 5ft 2 and the beds were not long enough for me, my feet hung off the end.

Breakfast was good. Location was suitable for our requirements. Very pleasant and helpful staff
Insanely creaky and noisy floor boards in our bedroom and particularly in the corridor which woke us up each time somebody walked by.

Really convenient location, comfortable and clean. Very comfortable beds. Plenty of parking.
Very squeaky floor boards, which disturbs you when someone walks past. Bathroom lock didn't work and shower head kept falling down.

Breakfast.
Uncomfortable beds with protruding springs. Early morning noise from pipes. Cardboard thin walls.

It was well situated for our needs and provided free parking on site which considering the dreadful weather was useful. Bed large and very comfortable though it would have been nice to have a comfortable chair in the room. Bathroom clean and tidy, shower perfectly adequate.
Reception staff were not particularly welcoming - I appreciate they might be on the phone but if someone comes to the desk the caller can hold just for a moment whilst that client at the desk is quickly dealt with. Didn’t mind that room not serviced for less than 3 days but in fact there were no teabags in the room on our arrival. Evening meal was excellent . Breakfast (not included in the price of £289 for 3 nights) was disappointing. Club house comfortable but difficult to find a quiet area to be able to sit and chat with a family member in the afternoon due to raucous groups of guests and tv/music on in all areas.

Location, staff and food
Bedroom and room servicing. We had dog frendly room which we found poor. Small room, small bed with paper thin walls .The plumbing made awful noises every time the person in next room used the bathroom. Rooms only cleaned every 3 days?

Staff friendly. The breakfast was good and plenty of choice. We also had dinner one evening which was delicious and the portions were great. Would definitely recommend eating in the restaurant. Also nice bar area to get together with friends. My husband played golf and enjoyed that. Next time I may try to use the health club facilities.
Room is a bit dated but adequate. Bed was huge and comfy. Also bit warm at night with no aircon. We were on the down stairs so ended up having to open our window but the lock was inadequate. Also no safe available in the room but the receiption staff did offer use of the main one.

The staff were lovely great location food amazing room view and size brilliant
We never hardly slept the mattresses need throwing out we had to sleep on top of the quilt the mattresses were the worst I've ever experienced..they must be over 20yrs old definitely felt that way .pillows lumpy the walls are so thin we could here nxt door stirring the cupa they had there telly on till 2 then back on at 7 in morning it was so clear I could hear every word like it was our telly on ...not exceptable when I've booked a Premier suit .big cobwebs top of curtains bathroom tiles haven't been cleaned in a while alot of water marks all over and when you sit on loo you can clearly see ot all
...not nice ..needs a lamp in room
We were going to have a lie in and a nice breakfast with you but after being woken at 7 with a loud TV and barley any sleep we just got straight up and went home...it was my 50th bday so not a great end to it even though the evening meal was amazing

Location
Apart from one member of staff the bar staff need more training, this is not a reflection on their capabilities, more a situation of lack of management

Clean bed linen and towels and sanitary ware cleanish.
Given poor choice of evening food, breakfast was better than I expected.
Lots! Very tatty decor, damaged doors and walls, threadbare carpet….and grubby going on filthy! Not been dusted for weeks. Hot water from BOTH taps in bathroom yet radiator in bedroom remained stubbornly cold. Not worthy of 3 star AA.
Evening menu either from fryer or curry, taco, pizza….not a vegetable in sight or any remotely healthy.

Where it was.
It was my mistake, it was a golf Hotel in the middle of the forest, forest of Dean, I thought it would be better than it was for people who weren't just interested in golf. Full of loud people only interested in golf.

Staff were nice. Great location. Plenty of parking. Nice to have decaf tea in the room as standard.
Lots of long blonde hair in plughole. Room not that clean. Tv dated, no streaming services. Bathroom fixtures dated and unsightly. Beds very hard. Duvet inside duvet cover was a weird grey colour and sheets scratchy. No bedside table on one side of the bed and no reading lamps. Electrical sockets very dated and wobbly. Also resturant photos promise a lot but don't deliver, especially for the price. The asian chicken was like rock and too dry to eat.

Lovely dog friendly hotel & spacious clubhouse that served great food.
Staff were very helpful & nice.
Our room was a little dated decor wise & rather small for the price we paid
2.0 / 10.0
Very small room, dirty bath, turned cold water on in basin, very high pressure hot brown water shot out and soaked me and the whole bathroom, bath doesn't drain, reception closed so nowhere to complain to. Dirty cups, only one teaspoon in the room. Went to the bar for tea, tables all filthy, £3.50 for half a cup of hot water with a teabag and little cartons of UHT milk.
I looked though old feedback and these are all problems people have had before over a long period, so it seems that it's badly run and managed by someone who really doesn't care.

The location was convenient for us and there was plenty of parking. The room was a reasonable size and we liked the powerful shower.
We found the reception staff disinterested and unhelpful. On arrival, we were told that we had booked a double room, but I pointed out that we had booked a suite. We were asked to pay and handed our key card with no additional information about where to find our room. The hotel website states that suites have a super king bed as well as a comfortable seating area. We had the bed, but were surprised to find electric sockets in the middle of it! There was not a comfortable seating area in our room, therefore we didn’t get what we had paid for. The hotel looks very tired and is in great need of some TLC, both in the public areas and the rooms.
We went to the club house for dinner, which was a huge mistake. The place obviously favours catering for golf club members, rather than hotel guests. We ordered our meals at the bar and asked if we could sit in the dining area, where tables were nicely set up. We were told no and to find a table in the bar area, which was noisy and unpleasant. The tables were dirty and there was food on the floor. We weren’t able to have a conversation during our meal due to the loud, male voices with language and behaviour you might expect from a working mens’ club, rather than the country club it purports to be.
We had spent the previous two nights in another hotel in the Gloucester area where the staff couldn’t do enough to help and where dining in their restaurant was a pleasure.
Needless to say, we won’t be returning to Bells Hotel.
